Ive recently purchased an Aerogen 2 wind generator to install on a Sabre 27. The recommended fitting kit consists of 1" s/s tube 1.2 metres in length.
I would ideally like to mount it considerably higher than 1.2 metres, say about 2.5 metres so the blade tips clear my head. I don't really want to fit stay wires to the pole due to lack of space. The mounting bracket for the wind gen will only take 1" tube, I'm considering using 1.5" tube with a small amount of 1" tube welded into the top. Has anybody tried this or can suggest an alternative fitting?
I had a look at a few boats in Poole at the weekend and all the generators I saw seemed to be mounted on poles at least 3" in diameter.

i have radar,aerogen 3, + various antenni all mounted on a 50m/m s/s tube.
the aerogen is reduced to 1inch & is set above & abaft the radar.
the whole thing has 2 stays, i took a long time to design it after looking @ others.
i think that 2.5m may be a bit high about 1.8 to the u/sice of the blades ought to be enough

My wind generator is mounted even higher, so that it clears my hands when standing up and stretching my arms. Getting your hand hit by a fast rotating propellor isn't exactly a pleasure, I can assure you.
The generator is at present mounted on a 25 mm s/s structure bolted to the pushpit, but that's not ideal and I'm considering fitting it onto a larger diametre single pole as well. Trouble is finding the space on a very narrow stern.

50mm tubing sounds like a sturdy arrangement Sailorman. Did you have to have fixings specially made where it bolts to the coaming or deck or can they be purchased ready made?.

Triangulate with standard 1" SS tubing (available at around £5 per metre, as standard from your local SS supplier, ask at your local chandlery) angled aft from from each quarter to attach to the generator pole mounted vertically on the transom somewhere (your choice of location but preferably to stbd ) so that the bottom of the fan clears your head plus 6" when standing on the cockpit seats.
(1.2m is not enough, buy a longer length). Attach the poles together and the poles to the pushpit using standard (available at your chandler) U clamps. Thread the cable through the tubing leaving enough slack for future dismounting.
PS. Don't use wire stays, they work only by pulling and would, to be effective, keep the structure under continual tension.
Good luck.

all purpous made to my design after great deliberation / research.
the higher u go the more the bracing / triangulation element will become .
i had a problem deciding on the radar mounting & decided that a pole was better (pole / mast) as i can fit the radome & forget it.

I have a Rutland 903 on the end of 2.5 metres of 50mm SS tube. Fortunately it is supported quite high up by a gantry on the transom so I can't speak for the stability of an unstayed unit.
My problem however is that there is a continuous rumbling through the boat whenever the wind speed exceeds 10 knots. I have already tried insulating with a block of wood at the base and rubber sleeves at the gantry but the rumbling continues.
Anybody have any ideas on noise insulation?

I had a Rutland installed - up the mizzen mast. The noise transmitted down the mast sounded like a bag of nails being rattled. I alos had major problems with their regulator. It boiled my batteries - then they reset it and it wouldn't charge above 13.1 volts - no use to man nor beast. sent it back for resetting - it either boiled or didn't charge. In the end I sent it all back and got a larger alternator.

I fitted my Rutland 913 to an Ampair Pacific Mizzen L bracket. I cut a rubber pad from a car inner tube to go between the L bracket and the Mast. No vibration noise at all.
In the absence of a Mizzen, I reckon a large A frame across the transom fits the bill for lots of supplementary devices - Wind gen, Radar, emergency Arial, solar panels, back end of biminy. Oh! And not forgetting cockpit shower head /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
