I'm about to install an Airmar DTS800 transducer. From the installation instructions it appears you don't have to have it vertical - it can apparently cope with a 22 degree deadrise.

But logic tells me that if it's mounted off vertical, the depth reading will increase.

What am I missing (apart from a brain cell or more...)?

You need to make sure the flat side of the paddle wheel faces the bow.
I think the transducer sends out a "cone" rather than an "arrow",the shape of the cone allowing for the deadrise of the hull.
You should try the P19.. the instructions are totally wrong. When I spoke to Airmar's European office in St Malo (for the 20th time), they said...ooops, seems the instructions on the internet are the right ones.
Today was my fourth installation....
