This weekend I'm going to have a look at a Hallberg 312 Mark II. Any suggestions of what to be I should look for in detail? It's one of the last one's build before they moved to the 31 model. I will be joined by an expert from HR itself.

Thanks in advance

Arno

Check for deck problems. In particular...

- Look for areas where the deck remains damp longer than other areas.

- Check the caulking - does it stand a long way proud of the deck, or can it easily be pushed away from the side of the adjecent teak?

- Check underneath deck fittings, especially the chainplates - is there any sign of rust?

Hope that helps

Nice boats, very well made and designed for durability. If you have a guy from HR with you, that should help considerably.

I'd take great care to check the condition of the teak deck. This is perhaps the biggest potential repair bill. Try to assess how much wear the deck has had - you can often see a "ramp" where fittings are bolted on to the deck's original surface, giving an indication of how much teak has been worn away. If there are missing teak plugs, this is another indication of wear. If the teak is badly ridged from too much scrubbing, bear in mind it will need sanding to restore it to a reasonable condition. It's likely there'll be some bits of loose caulking, this can be easily rectified as a DIY job (but be sure to use silicone caulking because ordinary polysulphide doesn't stick unless you spend ages cleaning the groove).
