I've decided to fit an inner forestay on my Hunter 34 to take a storm jib but I am still not sure about the bottom fitting.
Instead of using the 350-400 quid fitting recommended for a removable inner stay is it possible to use blocks - say 4 or 6 to 1 purchase with 12 or 14mm rope?
Surely this would set as tight and as quick and allow the foot of the sail to be a couple of feet above deck for alot less or am I missing something.
Anybody tried this.

Well on my first boat that was the only way of flying the jib at the end of the bowspirit and it worked fine with a 4 to 1 tackle. I use the same arrangement with my storm jib on my current boat but whereas the first had a forestay to the end of the bowspirit, on this one I have no inner stay - I just hoist up the sail on the halliard and then downhaul it with the 4 to 1 tackle. It seems to work ok although I admit to not having had to use it out in really bad exposed condidtions.

A lot of Wharram catamarans set there standing rigging up this way. Also the giant cat Play Station has the same set up since they thought it to be more reliable. Sounds ideal for a storm jib. You would need to use a lashing that dosn't stretch such as Dyneema.
