I had some trouble with my 50:1 outboard last weekend. The tank is clean but to be sure I would like to put a filter in the fuel line just before the engine inlet. I am concerned that the oil in the fuel might clogg the filter. Does anyone know if this is likely to be a problem? The filter I have for the purpose is a simple small car fuel filter.

i have used the small plastic car types on diesels when the lift pump diaphragm ruptures, there is still good flow of fuel. and diesel seems more viscous, i'd be inclined to give it a go. if it does "block up" with oil then it'll stop.

Are you sure it doesn't have one already? Many small two-strokes have a small filter in a banjo union or somewhere similar.

Oil is totally soluble in gasoline. Oil alone will not give problems of clogging, even, in very old two-strokes, where ratios as high as 10:1 were used. If you have a blockage problem it is almost certainly due to some other contaminant.

One other thing. Many users (including me) have suspected a blockage problem when the actual cause was that they had forgotten to unscrew the tank breather.

that'll be fine, I presume it's a smallish o/b? Large ones can use more fuel than a small aftermarket car type filter can reliably supply.

I fitted a cheap plastic inline filter to my inboard 2stroke and it did a perfect job. You can see how much muck it is collecting and it is easy and cheap to replace. You wont have a problem with it clogging.
