Injector \'Service\'

I am finishing a top-end overhaul of a Yanmar 2GM20, and I have been advised to have my injectors serviced. I have a few questions:

Has anybody has this done?

Did it make any difference?

Where and how much?

How much for new injectors?

Yes I had the injectors serviced on my old obats Volvo 2003. I found that it helped starting, and reduced the amount of unburnt fuel. If you have gone to the trouble of top overhauling the engine it would seem a pity not to complete the job, and I think. but you should check, that they fit new parts to the important bits so that after being serviced your injectors should be as good as new.

I have "serviced" many injectors, have lapped injector seats and have fitted new nozzles to injectors. the biggest prob i found with them was that after many hrs of work they would either have blocked nozzle spray holes or would dribble before they injected. both would give a unsatisfactory firing/burning/ and consequently less power etc. clue would be a slightly blueish whitish exhaust especially if you got puffs of smoke on tickover as each cylinder fired the bad one would emit a slight puff which you could see.
having said all that we ran landrovers, toyotas, perkins 4108 welding sets in angola until they fell apart and never touched the injectors, we did change fuel and oil filters monthly.
if you have overhauled the engine get the injectors to a good diesel workshop and get them to test and report and ask what they recommend, dont even think of new ones the cost is astronomical and the shop can rebuild as good as new

G'day Capt_Scarlet,

I'm advised that the fuel pump should be serviced whenever the injectors are serviced, this ensures no drips leading to blocked injector tips, also ensures correct pressure and even rates delivered.

Your service agent will be able to advise you on this depending on the condition and hours of the existing injectors.

I had a Yanmar injector serviced for about 40 pounds, if I remember rightly. It involved replacing the inner thingy (technical term) which was no longer conical due to corrosion. Improved starting and running no end. Clearing a blocked nozzle or whatever ought to be a lot less (i.e. labour only).

Take them to lucas or some other vehicle diesol fitters would not recomend taking them
to a marine engineer,get them done for half the price!!!

I guess a lot of sailors find themselves owning their first diesel when they buy a boat, and want to take care of the injectors, especially since they know they are high spec pieces of gear. So out they come and get sent off for maintenance becasue it's "time they were seen to"

Over time I have come to value a different piece of advice. Leave them alone. If there is rough running, poor starting or blue smoke, then it's time to consider sending one or more to be serviced. Bearing in mind that no marine engineer can deal with this technology, why pay the margin to have them passed down the road? Find your local injector service and get them serviced. I bet your local black cab taxi driver etc knows where to go...

i learned a long time ago

to engage brain before opening gob, dripping injectors are caused by faulty nozzles and have nothing to do nor will affect injector pumps, in all my lengthy diesel fixing life i never checked the pump at the same time as the injectors.

I agree totally to leave the injectors alone unless they show definite problems. Volvo used to specify that injectors should be removed every 2 years for servicing. Often this caused other problems by pulling out sleeves etc. Now they say leave them alone.

with a lot of the posts on technical subjects is that people post as if they know what they are talking about and newbies take it as gospel, if something is patently wrong i tell it how it is.
