Injecters Anyone ?

Summer Over (Ish) & Planning On Doing Some Winter Improvements . I Am Thinking Of Having The Injecters Serviced On My TAMD 60C Engines As The Engines Seem To Be Quite Smoky Until I Load The Rpm Above 2000.
They Have Not Been Done For Over 6 Years & I Am Just Wondering If It's Worth The Expense & Hardship Of Removing Them ?
 
And in the same vein....

Thinking of getting mine serviced, any one know of a good place to get them done? Local swindlers want £60 for each, I have 12 to do.. £720 Seems a lot for some new springs and calibration!
 
Go to a truck factors or indeed and commercial (vehicle) diesel service centre. I had 6 injectors done last June at LSUK in Portsmouth costing £180 for the lot. New tips for all of them, so essentially totally rebuilt and cleaned off, looked like new. Proved that the smoke problem wasn't just the injectors, even though they were knackered beyond simple recalibration.

Just because the lump says Volvo on the side doesn't make the injectors special, I'd be surprised if they are not standard ones out of the Bosch catalogue. The boatyard's costs also repoesent the cost of removing the things, replacing them and bleeding the fuel system afterwards. If you have a diesel boat you MUST know how to bleed the fuel system anyway, if not, go learn, you may need to know how to do this at sea some time. The rest of the process is undoing a few nuts, easing out injectors, and subsequently putting them back again. A lot easier than you might think, unless access is very hard. I was a scaredy until June, tried after encouragment here and found it pretty simple.

But Then Again , It Might Just Look A Bit Better When Leaving The Marina If There Wasn't Clouds Of Smoke
 
They can be tested inexpensively. All you need to do is remove them, find a good diesel workshop , preferrably non marine, and have the opening pressures, spray pattern checked. When they check the spray pattern they can tell you if they are dribbling, usual cause of black smoke. Eng. timing and a few other things will also give you same.
The tester can be bought for approx. £200, a few of you or a club could have your own.

Thanks Andrew, sounds like a plan... BTW, that £60 each was just for the injector, removal / refitting by me. Also a little scaredy, not sure when they were last done (20yr old engines) and although I have done fuel filters before, I haven't had a go at the high pressure side bleeding yet. That's the easy bit, just loosen an injector, not much but just enough to let diesel out, cover it all with a rag to stop it squirting everywhere, and then turn the engine over briefly with the stop button on. Check that fuel has appeared, if not do it again till it does, then tighten up and start.

I'm the least mechanically minded person around but even I find it easy!!
