I am looking at purchasing a classic and a few are in my sights. Although not necasserily wanting a restoration project I feel I have the boat building experience to do so! I have seen a 46ft LOA W.E.Thomas Yawl called 'Isolde' . However she seems very expensive (probably cicumstantial reasons!) considering she needs restoring. I cannot find info on her anywhere, can anyone shed any light? She appears very similar to Klang II of the same builder??? are they the same design? (interior and a few other areas differ!)

Thank you for your post. I have looked further into her current state and decided that it is far more work than I would wish to undertake. However I would be very interested to know how similar she is to Klang II and if they are the same design (English Channel Yawl)? If this info is available to you through lloyds I would be keen to know!

Many thanks

Klang ll was built in 1924. 21 Tons Thames measurement. Loa is 40.4, but this is to aft side of the stern post, you will need to estimte the extra for the counter.39ft on water line.11.6 beam and 6.1 depth. Sail area surprisingly low 550 sq ft. designed and built by WE Thomas. She looks from the photos to be much shallower draft than Isolde.

Isolde built in 1929,18 tons, 40.5 length + counter,37.5 on water line,10.6 beam, 6.1 draft, sail area 965 sq ft. Designed by SN Graham. First owner F.O. Everard, southampton.

Hope this helps. I see both are for sale and Boojum.

The information does help. Thanks. Isolde does look like she has potential, but she seems well over priced considering the amount of work, especially if you compare with the prices of 'Boojum' and 'Klang'. We had an interest in Boojum but she went under offer within a few days of the advert!

I have taken an interest for Isolde as well. And, as you, I think she is well overpriced. However I'm not giving up hope the owner will come to reason and will lower its price to a more seasonable level. I'm wondering if you can give me some more information about the amount of work you think she will need?
(and sorry for my poor english, I'm Dutch you see)

Hi,

I did not investigate too far because of the size of the project!

If the rest of the hull and frames are ok, then you could get the hull repaired quite easily. It is worth finding out how much and what condition the interior they have removed is in? what else they have i.e. rigging, sails, spars, engine, electronics etc...... I think it could cost far more to restore her than she will ever be worth!

Also find out if they documented the positions of all the interior etc...photgraphically, get those pice to look at! you could find yourself with a jigsaw that someone else started!

It is almost a full restoration.........new spars, sails, rigging, engine, everything will need stripping and painting, electrics fitted throughout etc...etc... perhaps at the right price. Dont forget transport costs if you have to move her (Holland?) 12000Euro perhaps!

Am interested to hear how you progress.
