Where can I get info on weather that's already been, rather than forecast? OK, some bad grammar going on there, but you get my drift. Interested specifically in wind speed last weekend, Saturday 17th/Sunday 18th in Thames Estuary/Swale. It was certainly not the forecasted F2-F3, as our almost totally sleepless night at anchor at Harty Ferry can testify to...Also the inshore forecast for Thames on R4 at 5.45 Sunday morning (or The Voice of Doom as HWMO likes to call it) said it would be F7-F8, occasionally severe GF9. Was it?

Still, launched little boat on Saturday at last and thrashed around in the Thames for a good while, great fun, before diving for the Swale. Thought going aground for an hour or so would be fun. Crawled up Conyer Creek, amused the local sheep with our mooring antics and boat now tucked up and enjoying Conyer hospitality until weekend after next.

Bring on the summer!

It would be really useful if one could reconcile perceived conditions against actual recorded data.

Down our way we have recordings at Chimet and Lymington, but Sods law says that they go off-air in windy conditions. I came up the Solent a couple of weeks back in an exciting F7/8 to find that the recorder had shut down when I tried to download the data. I just wanted to compare actual against my own estimate.

You should get used to making your own judgements, based on Beauforts observations. I don't think I'm ever more than one force out in my estimations unless I've been chewing prunes!

Past weather information is in general a commercial product of the Met Office, you have to pay! However, the met office site gives information from some selected stations - check the bottom left hand corner of their web page. Long-run historical information omits wind-speeds but for the last 7 days, hour by hour conditions are available. Alternatively call a local coastguard station, they will generally oblige.

Yes, Saturday night - Sunday morning was quite a blast in Kent, up to F8 recorded at Dover. We'd been planning to sail over to France on Saturday, luckily a mix-up over a new piece of rigging stopped us. There are worse places to be marooned than Conyer Creek, the Ship Inn is one of the great yachting pubs. Do they still have bound copies of all the early numbers of PBO?

(PS Ships_parrot has given the exact met office address. I think the Manston figures are usually the closest for coastal conditions in east Kent).
Edited by AndrewB on 21/04/2004 10:26 (server time).

Thanks, a really useful facility. This confirms our observations F7 with gusts to 42 knots throughout our Solent passage. A very enjoyable sail with just a scrap of jib and with wind and tide carrying us quickly in relatively smooth seas. My nephew was onboard and taking a keen interest as a classic cold front came through shortly after the barometer had bottomed.

Once clear of the Solent, wind increased and the seas became altogether more playful. Pity Chimet was out of action!

<Do they still have bound copies of all the early numbers of PBO?>

Fink so, saw stacks of mags lounging on window sills like gangs of disaffected youths. Liked the pub, though HWMO and I were too exhausted to do anything more than raise trembling glasses to our lips as our eyeballs rolled loosely in their sockets...we must have looked a sight amidst all those smart yotties in their new season Mustos...

Are you serious???? This place used to be the haunt of the lost-cause-project yachtie. Paint stained unravelled jersey, mud-bedecked wellies and a mad, far away gleam in the eye was the normal dress-uniform.

You should have fitted in well. Except your boat floats.

Re: Ship Inn

There were a few rogue-paramilitary-looking types, complete with mad staring eyes, but also quite a number of gleaming jackets in primary colours. But you see red and white is so December 2003...

Oh, and we may soon be becoming members of the lost-cause-project gang, so will fit in even better...shh, don't tell my mum...
