Nicest places we found were the Tuamotu Islands of French Polynesia. Fakarava in particular. The Marquesas Islands are also pretty special. The Society Islands... Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea etc seemed pretty ordinary after the above.

The island of Tanna in Vanuatu was amazing. The most primitive island we visited with some of the friendliest and generous people and... a live, very active volcano that you can go to the very summit and watch the eruptions. Incredible.

There is a very, very readable blog written about the yacht "Do It" who are currently sailing from Scotland around the world.

There blog is outstanding in all respects and certainly worth a read. You click on the red track for any specific part of their route and can read, month by month what they did, where they visited and what broke on their yacht.

They also made some very important notes about the customs of the South Pacific islanders and how it is SO important to visit the Head of the Village or Tribe to ask his permission to visit his 'kingdom'
