Hi all. I am looking at buying a wooden boat and have just seen a HAVEN CLASS, 27' motor sailer, sloop rig, Perkins 4108 diesel, pitch pine on oak, Built 1965 by W Lee and Sons of Stanground, Peterborough.
If any one has heard of this builder or indeed has an example of this boat or any info, I would really appreciate you getting in touch.
Thanks for your help,
Fair winds,
Austin Holden

Re: Haven Class Motor Sailor

Hi there, I own a Haven Class 27 foot motor sailer. "Avocet" was built by Clapson and Sons on the Humber River in 1963. She was in a total state when I bought her and I have spent the last year doing her up. I can give you more info and history and pics if you like though she is not on the water yet. Great boat though.

Havern class, Lee and son

Ive got a 1967 boat built by W Lee and son. I have just replaced the 4107 with a nanni 38 they are very strong hulls, ribbed clinker, at sea you need to steer from the rudder and not the wheel.Perhaps this thread should of gone to classic boat I nearly missed it

W Lee & Sons Boatyard

Hi,

W. Lee & Sons was my great grandfather's business that closed in the late 60's or early 70's So it was very interesting to see that some of their builds were still out there. Unfortunately most of those involved in the building of these boats have since passed away. My grandfather who was still building boats in his 70's (fibreglass catamaran) out in Australia before passing in 2009.

Would be interested to see any pics of the boats to add to my family history.

Thanks
Jamie Lee

Avocet - Haven Class 27 footer

I have now put Avocet on the water and she is very nice. It took two years and consituted a total re-build. I very slightly changed the original Francis Jones design to lengthen the cockpit roof but only by about a foot. This gives slightly more cover from the weather and allows a large PV battery top up panel to be fitted along with a large hatch above the steering position. She is in beatiful shape and a good motor sailing cruiser for the east coast sleeping a family of four.

Hi to all, if your looking for information on Lee:s of standground, Mr W.Lee snr was one of the founding members of the British Boatbuilding Federation. The company also built lifeboats for the Royal Navy. I dont think i have any drawings on the Haven, but its been long time and most of the drawings are gone. yours sincerely, Jon Lee, grandson. email me at jonlee5935@gmail.com
