I need to work on a 31 foot long keeler, sorting out electrics, rudder issue, and generally tidying her up, and will need about 12 months out of the water in a relatively inexpensive yard within reasonable driving distance from Bristol. A quick look at the Bristol Harbour Authority's website suggests that Bristol has a long waiting list and is expensive, so have ruled that out. Ideally one that will allow me to stay on board out of the water, and won't object to the occasional engine test (5 mins with water hose inlet) Anyone got any suggestions?

Plenty of room at Bristol Marina yard but it depends on your definition of inexpensive but very convenient, all the usual facilities, water, power ,toilets, showers. The old sludge jetty at Shirehampton is where all the dead boats end up ,must be reasonably cheap but no permanent lift out system as far as i know.

We've been at Rudders near Milford Haven since September. They charge £16.20/ week for our 27ft boat. They have all the usual facilities, I'm told it is the cheapest in the area. http://www.ruddersboatyard.co.uk/
Just looked at the map - I'm sure you can find somewhere nearer than that! oops! :)

Newport Uskmouth S C is a friendly club with all the kit and a big hard standing. Storage out of the water is FOC for the first 2 or 3 years and there is leccy on site plus workshops and hoist etc. BUT the club is sensitive about being used as a storage facility for people not interested in long term membership so you would not only need to join but also to join in.

I wanted to thank those who responded, but without closing off the contributions - so, thanks for all the suggestions and info so far, please keep them coming. Amazingly, I've been sailing for most of my life, but had never realised that clubs existed for boats bigger than sailing dinghies (apart from the Cruising Association, which I joined years back).

I'd like to join in this thread. We need somewhere in the same area next year, probably February or March, to lift out for 8 weeks. Motorboat 12.3 metres, weighs 25 tonnes. Don't want to sleep on board while it's out but do need electricity and reasonable security. Within 50 miles of Chepstow. Penarth can't do it (too heavy). Portishead can do it, but we are interested in exploring all alternatives.

I found East Llannion Boatyard at Pembroke Dock very secure, very friendly, cheap and with a good haul out boat lift.

Well you guys are lucky getting a weekly rate of £16/week. Where I am in Western Australia they want $27/day or $189/week for a 43ft yacht. That equates to around £95/week according to my calculations
