I have been successfully using my iPad as a navigation aid for a while now. It sits in it's purpose build waterproof case, mounted on the cockpit side of the bulkhead. The only problem with it is battery life, during normal day cruising on familiar waters, it will go all day. However, when at night/unfamiliar waters/long journeys the only way to charge it is to remove it from its case (not as easy as the instructions would have you believe) and plug it in down below for a few hours.

So, I have been looking at those wireless charging thingies (induction loop). My questions is, if I were to mount the charger on the back of the bulkhead, would the magnetic field go through the GRP (aprox 4mm) and the mounting bracket and waterproof case?

Just thought, would the magnetic field effect the compass too?

Cheers in advance

I use magnetic induction charging for an iPhone (Powermat) and it won't go through anything let alone 4mm GRP. There are cases made with waterproof power sockets but they're expensive.

The other thing to consider is heat dissipation - the waterproof cases tend to be good insulators, so if the receiving coil is inside it you may find the ipad overheats.
