Is there any point in having an A-Z of second-hand boats if not all the boats are listed? Having waited for months for YM to work through the alphabet to R, I must confess serious disappointment that Roamer 36 and Roamer 38's are not even mentioned. It is not as if they were foreign boats but were built in the UK and there are still quite a few around.

The fact of the matter is that if I mentioned every boat which has been put on the British market since, say 1960, the series, which is, in any case, going to run for nearly five years, woulkd actually never end since more designs would be coming on to the list than were being covered.

I have had to be selective and sometimes the selection may appear a bit arbitrary to owners of some of the less well known boats. For what it is worth I have selected boats on the following basis.

*Available in the UK for a reasonable period of time between 1960 and 2002 (at least two years)
*Sold in numbers sufficiently significant to allow a secondhand market to exist (minimum around 10)
*Be main stream to YMs primary interestrs - ie coastal and offshore cruising under sail
*Be approrpiate to the size of boat of interest to the majority of our readers - ie 20 to 45ft
*In the absence of the above, be a significant design in the development of yacht cruising.

Clearly there have been designs which fulfill these criterial yet have still not got in. Usually this is because they are part of a very large range (eg Beneteau) and similar to others which are included. Exclusion has also often been due to pressure of space in a particular month. I have also excluded boats because I don't think they are very good and because I know nothing about them, nor can find any relevant material.

The Roamer has a better claim to inclusion than most which have been left out and a good case could be made for its inclusion. It was on my original long list (which ran to something close to 1,000 boats) but unfortunately was squeezed out at the final hurdle. I am sorry I have disappointed you after a long and patient wait.

It is hoped that the series will be made into a book and there will be a chance then to add in a few of the more obviously missed designs.

How about a whole new mag to cover this along the lines of Parkers car guide or are there too many types of boat and not enough people for this to be viable.

Sailing Today's website before they were bought by their current ownership used to have a comprehensive DB .. unfortunately no longer available

It would be an ace idea for a web developer..
