There was a major incident below Bray Lock at about lunchtime today. It seemed to involve a Sea Ray cruiser and a pontoon boat. There was talk of an explosion and all the emergency services were in attendance.

'None of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening' - burns can be non life-threatening but horrible. I hope thay are all o.k.

It seems a propane gas explosion was the cause. Also reports say injuries are not life threatening. I hope this the case. I am sure it was a horrific experience for all involved at the scene though. I wish a speedy recovery to those who were hurt.

We saw the boat tied up next to the crane at Bray marina when we returned on sunday. Looked like a late 90's bayliner and apart from canopies looking damaged, the rest of the boat didn't look to bad. It certainaly wasn't a burnt out shell, which hopefully meant that after the initial explosion there didn't seem to be evidence of a major fire.
Hope all involved recover quickly

Sounds consistent with a flash flame of propane vapour.

We got caught up in the queues, took a couple of hours to clear Boulters and Bray once it reopened. Saw the Sea Ray at Bray marina with covers over it and police crime scene tape all around it.
Still not clear what happened even the lockies weren't sure. All those Searays have alcohol stoves which never looked very clever to me, petrol power as well.
Lets hope it was not that serious.

Your boat blows up mid river and your family get taken to hospital and you are undoubtedly in shock. I would call that pretty serious

Pouring Petrol is safe enough, it's what happens to the Fumes and whats going on around it thats going to be the issues!

I'm sure we all know it ad nauseum...just one thing to add, LPG or Petrol fumes tend to be heavier than Air, so tend to collect in bilges etc. It's quite possible the engine was stopped to refuel, bilge blower turned off, and not started up again for five minutes before restarting!?

But that would require a number of other issues to exist rather than just a failure to use the blower.

Filling a boat with petrol should not result in petrol fumes in the bilge. Even with fumes in the bilge the starter should be ignition protected and not ignite any such fumes. The blower is a fall back which covers any such failures, and a properly working boat should start safely regardless of whether the blower is used or not.

You are assuming that the vessel did not have the engine/s running when the refuelling was taking place...

I would have thought it better to wait for the official report. All this speculation and "expert" opinion, who probably did not see the accident, is just a waste of time.

Lets get the facts and then chew over them. More importantly the family on board who have suffered injuries need to be wished a speedy recovery.

Our adjacent moorer said that the said boat was following them downstream under the M4 bridge when the incident happened. So it was mid river and moving...
