On my old Eventide we took the engine out by using a block and tackle attached to the boom, we had to manhandle it off its beds and slide it down a short plank onto the saloon floor, then it was a simple job of lifting it up through the hatch way, then the part I wasn't too happy about, we swung the boom outboard with the engine attached straight onto the van.
The engine was a 6hp petter, so not that heavy, I wouldn't recommend this method for a larger engine.
