Inboard for Westerly 25?

Friend has just phoned me to say that the eBay inboard diesel he purchased won't fit into the Westerly 25 he recently purchased - comes way back into the cabin. Anyone have any suggestions on what might fit and which won't cost him large amounts of money? This is his first sailing boat and he's keen to get afloat. My feeling is that the old outboard which came with the boat with extended controls might still be the best bet.

As esoteric designs go - the Westerly 25 takes a bit of beating. It's designed for an outboard on a sort of rail system, the weight distribution will be all wrong with a inboard, you can get some very good and very reliable used outboards, 7 or 8hp will be great and a 9.9hp would see him flying.

The rail system has long gone and the stern has been glassed up. It had a petrol motor inside, but there must be a few of these boats with diesels surely?

What engine has he tried and failed to fit? And what was the petrol engine?

As sailorman says the Yanmar 1GM is the shortest engine, but the Nanni/Beta 10/14 is essentially the same length.

Some BMW type. No idea of petrol type.
