Can someone explain why the posh household did not stand for their Christmas dinner toast in contrast to the Petty Officer and rating homes?

Probably stems from the days of wooden ships, where the headroom in the wardroom or captains cabin was limited. This led to officers being exempt from the tradition of standing for the "loyal toast".

Did you know the term 'toast' came from the days when wine was of poor quality and it was found that it could be improved by floating a slice of toasted bread in it?
