In total ignorance: Plancraft Stingray question

I had about half an hour of blasting around in a bright red Plancraft Stingray in the mid-'80s, and I thought I was Sonny Crockett. The fact that it was only 14 ft long, with an aged Johnson 25hp instead of a really mean black 60hp Mercury, didn't cool my excitement.

All these years later, I can't remember if the Stingray was actually as good a boat as I wanted to think. It might have been a bathtub. Are they still the little Ferraris I regarded them as, or just kids' boats? Are they okay in rough water, or best pulling skiers on reservoirs?

What is today's equivalent sub-twenty-foot inshore speedster? (Sorry, I really don't like RIBs or 'bow-riders'.)

Thanks.

One of the many small sportsboats around in the 70's, no better or worse than most of the others. From memory it did have a flatter hull than the Fletchers of the day which could cause a lot of bouncing in a chop. But with a 25hp, \i dont think it would have done much bouncing ;)

If you want to know about fast boats available these days, have a look over on Boatmad.com. They like Rings, Phantoms, Marshans etc. Lots of them run easily over 60kts and some are touching 80 with sub 21ft boats

Hi
In the early 80's I went to the SIBS looking to buy a new mono ski, I did buy one but I also bought a new orange coloured Plancraft Stingray and a 80hp merc on the back to replace my old fletcher with a 50hp merc. It completely changed my skiing - for the better I must add, and from a boat handling view it was great. Would I have another one - yes I would.
I seem to recall they are still being made but don't have the address with me.
Hope this is of some help.

Many years ago we owned one of these.for a 21footer it was a fantastic sea boat.very sorry to see it go but we out grew it.
It was so well designed that it did not need trim tabs.
I wanted them to make me a stretched version(28ft)but the owner @ the time was quite ill so never pursued it.didn't mind too much as it got me into Fairline & never looked back.
Regards mm1.
