Nice to see that in a time of austerity the chandlery at our marina is still able to maintain a high mark-up on the goods it sells. I was looking for a Jabsco diaphragm for a shower pump chandlery said they could order one and that they would give me a phone next day. No phone call so onto web where I discovered a supplier almost locally phoned up to find they could supply next day for £7.20 inc Vat then I hear from chandlery yes we can get this for end of week cost £18.35 inc Vat.
It’s a no brainer really.

S&L used to deliver to my house on a Thursday, in the good ole days

I needed a sea rails / pan clamps kit for my Nelson Spinflo stove. It was cheaper to have it sent from New Zealand (and pay the import duty) than to order from a UK chandler. As far as I know the part was originally made here and sent to NZ.

A couple of years ago a local "bits & bobs" shop was selling small measuring jugs, ideal for measuring 2 stroke oil etc, for 27p. The nearby chandler was selling (or hoping to) remarkably similar (read identical) for £4.95

Either the manufacturer/distributor is not charging enough or the retailer is ripping it, anyway Mack Engineering, look up web site, actually supply this chandlery they have a large supply of Jabsco, Johnson, rule and whale parts it pays to shop around.

I see he does a range of Teleflex type engine gear cables!

Pass the word around, then you will really get some bargains at their CLOSING DOWN sale

He may well have already found a supplier with a closing down sale - who knows?. Which one is supplying at a commercially viable price? For that matter which one is supplying new stock and which is old stock?

Or like (in the dark ages) we could buy pattern-parts diaphragms for carbs instead of genuine Stromberg ones.

The cheap ones were exactly that.

Yesterday I went to our local W H Smith's, which has taken over our GPO, priced one C6 envelope - 59p; next door but one, a packet of 50 - 99p - identical envelopes ie. 30 times mark -up! Never seen racketeering like that!
