For smaller, sinkable boats like mine, here is an old idea for holes...

Assuming you have knocked a hole in your boat with some semi-submerged article, you should carry a plastic tarpaulin (folds up small). This can be wrapped around the bow area and tied on so it covers below the water-line and hence the hole. Then drive the boat back to port and don't stop till you get there. The water pressure holds the sheet to the boat and stops water being driven into the hole.

I carry the sheet - I've yet to try it! (and that's my disclaimer!)

well I think its about time you tried it out. No use trying these things for the first time in a life or death situation. You'll need a faily big hole to give it a real test not a namby pamby pinhole.

Good idea,

How about you filling a Welsh gap on the Round Britain jobbie?

Could you make Liverpool?

I tried this once and it works a treat. About a four inch hole. No water came in.

Well I'd rather not if you dont mind. However....as you have mentioned it, I nearly ran in to a semi-submerged article that lay low on the surface on my way during a 35 mile trip. I went back to have a look....it was an Oak tree trunk - about 10 tons of it.

Zoiks!!

If you have a hole that is being held because of fwd motion it might be an idea to run up a beach. In fact, it is great fun to run up the beach anyway - the boat stops very nicely indeed!

I knew someone who raced dinghies on a large reservoir near London. During the war telegraph poles were wired together and strung across the surface to stop enemy flying boats or gliders landing on it. Susequently quite a few became immersed in the mud at the bottom but every so often one would break free and hang vertically in the water with the top just below the surface! Bang!!!!

There was a contraption I saw at the London Boat Show many years ago that resembled a small umbrella which if pushed through the hole and extended would stem the leak enough for the bilge pump to handle. I do not know if it is still in production.

The tarpaulin trick is an old working narrowboat remedy for leaks. They also would use clay to bung up leaks.

Regards.

Specially shaped? or just the regular square/rectangle? Interesting thought... not sure it'd be viable for Cinnamon, but worth exploring... what happens when u get into port tho? Make straight for the crane? ;-)
