A missunderstanding between me (helm) and the nav resulted in a "oh wait - that mark...?" moment needing a quick gybe and drop. Totally my fault, I had the wrong mark in my head - thought we had about half a mile to go!

But our top crew dug me out of the hole, made us look good, and didn't even moan about it!

pah - that's not a quick drop - a quick drop is where the kite is being lowered AS you're going around the mark ....

Well done them.

In a similar breeze, I tried helping the main over like your man in the red trousers at 1:20 or so and got pulled into the guard wire on our 38 footer. Didn't look good. Never had a problem on any other boat. We didn't have a spinnaker up though, so I suppose there's more wind in the main.

Did you win your protest or is that just a shredded red duster?

Alternatively you must use your protest flag all the time?

Another boat had missed a mark, going from behind us to way out in front. However they did the decent thing and retired after finishing.

If you were one of the leaders who went past us to a turning mark Browndown area at around 11am you looked good. Rest of the fleet were behind us and my crew were commenting on the drops.

Nice video, did not appreciate you rolled so much.

We didn't get sent that far, think that would have been the bigger boats. The rolling is only really noticeable when I'm trying to drive straight downwind. We were probably at about the limit of when that tactic is sensible!

Nice work! There was a longer clip which I also watched showing some great stuff.

I do think they should have been disqualified for not going back for Phil's hat! (4:05) :D

Thanks for posting it.

Mmm - did think the mainsheet man was slightly on the slack side of loose. Would have preferred to see in/across/out during the gybe, and a faster trim as you came into the mark. Can't fault the foresail crew though. Slick.

In the breezier conditions we don't sheet the main on as we come into the mark, as we've learnt the hard way that over enthusiastic main trim can cause spinning out and I need to get the boat up to close hauled before we really power the main up. Ditto bringing it in throught the gybe - we only do that when we're worried about breaking things, as it has caused a broach before. The Elans are not blessed with overly large rudders...

That tacking is bad its a number three right, two maximum to do it . Gybing the MAIN , you pull it through the jammer right , WRONG , just pull one of the purchase sheets through the gybe ,that way you will not broach ever.I did not see one person calling the puffs. Who's the driver ,to much movement ,less movement = faster boat. Get the weight up on the rail , that way you can get the main in close hauled faster. In a blow ease off the halyards ,you will be suprised I can see they are way to tight. Hence you are spinning out.

Did I miss something? I didn't see a single tack in the whole video.

Don't forget the camera is fixed rigidly to the boat. That makes the boat look static and the helmsman and crew appear to bounce around.

It all looked fairly slick to me.

Give him a break, he was enjoying a fag at the time; not his fault the helm didnt know where he was going. :)

I have heard it suggested that bringing on the main should replace use of the rudder in roundings....just saying...
[edit] and of course it's totally simple to achieve in practice.... ;-) [/edit]
