Been a bit rough for a few days and had time to dwell on the subject, but time is slipping by and having completed the journey from the Wash to Deben last weekend, I'm not excited about the prospect of doing it again in Sixpence, then having to move back here before winter sets in.
Insurance will only cover her for the winter if she's on a pontoon, so has anyone got any ideas for the cheapest option in the area ?.
Looked at SYH (thanks Will) but I'm curious to hear what other options there are.

In the immediate area, Titchmarsh is the cheapest and the tradesmen are top notch. If you want to stay afloat, Shotley is virtually bombproof, likewise Fox's or Orwell yacht club pontoons.

Tosca III (my East coast home!!) stayed afloat last winter and will probably do the same again.

Dave, I am sure you can get third party cover over winter. How about coming out at Waldringfield or Woodbridge?

Last time I looked (year before last) the pond at Walton on the Naze was the cheapest option afloat. This does restrict when you can use the boat as the gate can only open at high tide for perhaps half an hour, and on low neap tides it may not be possible to open the gate at all.

The pond is owned by a Trust but Bedwells boat yard manage the berths. They are very helpfull and are an "old fashioned" boatyard. Their phone number is 01255 675873. There is a lady in the office some mornings but if not they might not answer the phone. Best times to get them are 0800-0830 or at morning coffee brake 1000hrs or just before lunch at 1300hrs.

Make sure you ask for the costs for floating in the pond, not a lift out and storeage in their yard. The have a quay which is a concrete wall with a concrete shelf and you can go there (for a very modest fee) over a tide, or more, to antifoul or generally inspect your craft.

Hi Jim, Spoke to the nice lady at GJW and full insurance cover is just within my pocket of affordability for the summer, but they only cover winter months if I go on to a pontoon or marina berth somewhere, so if I can find a way of keeping her in over winter I would prefer to, rather than lay her up somewhere down there where it's going to cost me, instead of up here where it's free

Dave

Brightlingsea has pontoon berths - OK they are in the middle of the river so you need a dinghy to get out there as the water taxi stops at end of Oct until Easter. Also there is the new marina at B'sea. The HM does 'rounds' too so the boat does get checked.

Contact Bernie the HM on 01206 302200 and see what they can offer. Moorings are taken on a season basis from 1 Apr to 31 Oct or on an annual basis from 1 Apr but I am sure he would be happy to offer a winter price too as most of the berths sit empty.

Flipper will come out sometime in Nov / Dec I expect. I did stay in 1 winter but in the end sailed her 2 or 3 times so as she is GRP I now bring her out for a chance to dry out and delay the inevitable 'O' word on '70's plastic!

Are you in the Deben now? I did say I'd sail up this weekend but plans have changed unfortunately and I now have non water commitments and M-i-L arrives on Monday so I need to clean off the broomstick stowage. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
