New to me but we need to get the mainsail down and the sail seems to be attached at the foot in the mast somehow. Its a Seldon rig. Does it just unloop or do l need spanners etc to undo the metal thingy??

The webbing loop on the sail should just unhook from the twisty metal fitting on the furling. It is usually a fiddly job, and you may need to use a screwdriver or similar implement to encourage the webbing. The feed gap in the luff groove on the furling spar is about 300mm up from the bottom, and you may find that the sail's luff tape reaches below the feed gap, in which case you'll need to get this bit out upwards before dropping the rest of the sail down.

WE have a small 3" hole on the side of the mast which we can get to the lower webbing strap. Once the mainsail halyard is loose it is easy enough to get the webbing strap off.

Indeed.
We also have a Selden rig, and it has an oblong plastic cover on the port side of the mast at that level. You take that off, and it's not all that hard to get to the webbing loop. There is a "t" shaped hook which it fits around. With a loose halyard, I have never found it hard to get on or off.
