in-line silencer

Hi all,
I have a Ford 6 cylinder 120HP diesel engine in my Broom European. This weekend I found the in-line stainless steel silencer leaking river water into the hull of the boat.
What be the best course of action -
1 - Would it be best to remove and see if it can be repaired / welded.
2 - Replace with a new SS silencer.
3 - Replace with a new plastic silencer.

If the plastic silencer - are they any good and would it have an adverse effect on the engine running

Is it definitely the unit that is leaking or the hose has perished and leaking?

I've not heard of a SS muffler going but I know at some point we'll be replacing the 6" exhaust hoses on our 40 year 250hp Sabres. When it does get done, I'll replace both mufflers with something more effective than the current ones as the boat is quite loud.

When they are replaced, choice will be based on what work will be involved to mount them as fabrication of new mountings may prove expensive.

Is it just a silencer or a waterlock as well? If the latter you may be able to replace it with a Vetus waterlock which come in different styles depending on location and space. Alternatively and probably first approach is to remove it and see if it can be repaired. Normally they corrode around the welds.

I'm watching with interest as it's a job I'll have to do at some point in the near future.

I would use a Vetus silencer or water-lock, whichever is appropriate. (No picture on your post Harvey).

A few years ago fitted a pair of waterlock type silencers to a pair of M135 Sabres
The noise from the straight through system was awful.
The Vetus stuff was expensive and sourced pair of waterlocks at a fraction of the price from a company who mainly dealt on wide beam barges.Might have been Dutch.
Easy to fit and made from plastic.
No loss of performance .

That is just a muffler for use in straight through exhausts. Suspect your boat has waterlocks, although it may well have additional mufflers.

Without seeing the originals it is difficult to suggest alternatives.

i have attached a photo of the existing silencer. The exhaust pipe comes off the engine down to this silencer and then straight out the back of the boat. The silencer is below the water line so full of water always.

What diameter hose is fitted? As Tranona indicated, looks like the welds are suspect.

90mm hoses. i have not taken it out yet, but at the bottom of the silencer you could feel the water dripping

If you’re going the plastic/GRP route, if you don’t already have them fitted, I would also recommend that you install exhaust gas temperature monitoring/alarms too. Some of the Vetus equipment has a max temp of 70deg C. Centek GRP ones are ok up to 177deg C. The alarm could save you and your boat in the event of a cooling water failure!
