Alan Villiers footage?-as a young man he fell from the top of the mainmast when his boat made landfall in Australia earlier than esxpected-first Director of British Maritime Museum Greenwich.
Last of the Grain Racers-The Lawhill or the Palma?
Note the brace winches invented by brace winch Jarvis.
Sadly sailing ships were rapidly evolving and adopting modern technology when cheap oil kicked them into touch.
One of the grain racers held the record under sail from Australia to Falmouth until quite recently.
But then never forget the poignent comment from Shackletons journal whilst making his epic journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia and sailed past what was left of a sailing boat that had foundered in the southern ocean.

Thanks for posting the links. I've recently been sailing in the Canaries on a tallship and I'm glad to say the weather was much better!

Always felt respect for my grandfather, who sadly I never met; he was apprenticed in sail out of Hartlepool, his home was Whitby, the son of a Whitby whaler. Not a Cape Horner, however I possess his indentures.

I have a book somewhere called The Voyage by Sterling Hayden, who became a well known Hollywood actor, I thought it was a good read. He's the first guy to speak in The Last Cape Horners clip.
