Spend a day on the boat anyway. Forget the MIL. I banned mine from the house 5 years ago, never see her

I have MIL and SMIL and FIL and SFIL to deal with 
.
The great thing is SWMBO whole family are terrified of boats, MIL still dose not trust me after she got talked into taking a look at the boat. She was half way down the cement pontoon when she realized they floated too.
FIL just refuses to go near water, when we suggest a restaurant for a meal out they ALWAYS choose one further in land (we are talking by miles not feet here
)..

Go with the mother in law lunch, get the points in and save sailing for better weather when you would really resent being shorebound.

No it's not as bad as all that. MIL, SIL and BIL turned up and Her Ladyship prepared a very nice lunch.
Didn't go to boat anyway because the boat I race on is not my boat, the owner didn't go either, my boat is in Greece, last night my foot swole up and I'm hobbling about on crutches (it's a chronic thing of which I don't know the cause, Her Ladyship says it's gout, but it's not a typical gout if it is).
