Hi everyone,

Hope the moderators don't mind me posting this, it isn't commercial at all and rlates to my PhD studies. Hopefully it will ultimately benefit sailors.

As many of you will know I am in the 2nd year of a PhD entitled "The Public Perception of Weather Forecasts in the Broadcast Media".

The aim of my thesis is to improve the quality of television weather forecasts, making them more relevant to those who use them and to increase the recall that viewers have through improved graphics and communication. This is the first time such research has been carried out, and so those who input their views on this subject may have a real impact on media weather forecasts in the years to come.

As part of my research I am carrying out a survey which involves watching a short weather forecast and then answering 15 multiple choice questions based on the video. It is all completed online and should take no more than 10-minutes in total. Are you willing to help?

If so, you can take part now, and here are the two simple steps to take:

1. Watch the video online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvCsPWPD7Cs

2. Immediately after watching the video answer the 15 questions at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=597593471952

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ONLY WATCH THE VIDEO ONCE AND THEN ANSWER THE SURVEY QUESTIONS IMMEDIATELY

If you can spare the time to take part in this survey I would really appreciate it, and I will make the results available once analysed.

Thank you in advance, with best wishes,
Simon

A choice such as other might help. Although you had a lot of choices where one could get the weather it missed out Marine VHF. (the Coast Guard) they give weather reports, but not often enough in my view.

Good luck with the study.

Done that for you Simon

One for the wish list is that I would like the weather forecasts to talk about the weekend from Monday. Yes we know that things change, but I for one am looking for the trend over the week, and as you said in your broadcast, most people are really thinking about the weekend, whatever their hobby.

Good luck with the PhD

The graphic for the weekend gave an overall impression of the weather but generally too much too quick. More slower is better than less quicker but I guess airtime is limited. On the web you can go at your own speed.

Done it too......

One of my pet hates about the TV weather is when they start the forecast with a forthcoming weather event, and then say "but more of that later....." and spend the next 30 seconds telling everyone what the weather has done in the last 24 hours! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

yes I did it too plus sent it onto other sailing friends who might or might not have received a copy privately.

More the merrier is what I say.
