I'm looking to buy some engines for my boat in the USA and import them to the UK. Advice from anyone with recent experience would be most welcome.

Can anyone recommend a good freight forwarding / cargo handling company?

What about paperwork and import costs? I guess they'll be 17.5% VAT to pay?

Seems like if Invoice price is over £130, then you pay duty, not sure what the rate is, and then VAT on total price, inc delivery cost.

Make sure they are suitable for EU operations or you'll be stuck with em.
Since the OP says he'll use them in an existing boat, the choice is actually even more restricted if she's CE certified.
In fact, her Declaration of Conformity should mention the engines models (very often) and their power (always, in the DoCs I've seen so far). So, either he sticks to them or, if he gets different engines (albeit CE compliant) he might have to re-certify the boat.
Or he just doesn't bother about all that, of course... :)

Others will burn your ears about emissions and RCD :) You did not say where the engines were for shipping out from.

Ooops, I didn't think about it: if those engines are supposed to go in the Settimo Velo e/r, obviously you can forget what I previously said. Any updates on that project, anyway?

Ultimo Velo

The engines are for my Settimo Velo. I'm looking at various options, both gas and diesel sterndrives. I will probably go for gas - to keep the weight down - and to preserve the original design / character of the boat ...

It's been too cold in the workshop to get out the epoxy, to do the deck, so I've been making some progress on the interior whilst hunting down engines.

I thought I'd arrange for a freight forwarding company to ship the engines in a shared container from the East Coast - probably New York - to Southampton, where I could get them picked up.

If anyone knows of a good freight forwarding company then let me know.

In the meantime, I've been trying to think of a name for the boat, as the original has been lost. I was wondering about Ultimo Velo, i.e. the Last Veil of the Seven (Settimo Velo). I thought would give her a link to Ultima Dea, a particularly famous Speranzella. That was until I found this link http://parma.repubblica.it/multimedia/home/8088663 which left me wondering exactly how the Italians use the term Ultimo Velo?!
