I bought my boat in 2007 ex vat and sailed to the Caribbean amongst other places. I'm now planning to sail it back to UK to sell. I will need to pay the vat on bringing it back to Europe. One school of thought is to import it in the Azores being a part of Portugal where i plan to stop anyway and pay the VAT there. Does anyone have any experience of this and whether it is practical?

I did this a couple of years ago and used Mid Atlantic Yacht Services as my Agents in Horta. At that time the VAT rate in the Azores was only 14% and it still may be. Give me a call tomorrow, (details are on my website) and I will go through the details with you.

Knowing what a PITA the Portuguese can be with paperwork - did they ask any questions about RCD compliance?

Azores and Madeira : 16% but I wouldn't count on this rate lasting for long. Cyprus is 15% but it's a bit of a detour. Luxembourg also is 15%; could you declare it there without actually importing it?

Worked very well for me last June .We paid 15% Vat in Horta with the help of Mid Atlantic Yacht services. They ask for your valuation of the boat ,and then come and check .
Boat was looking tired after the crossing and we could answer no to the questions of microwave ,TV washingmachine, etc.Floorboards where up to when we where visited ,we where tracing aleak from the holding tank .He didnt stay long.:)
