Important engine checks

On Ariam we have an engine log where such things are recorded.

I don't look at the engine daily, though. It's a basic mechanical engine of well-proven modern design, only a few years old, and the ancillaries are all in good order - it just isn't going to spontaneously go wrong while the boat is sitting moored up, and especially not in a gross way detectable by a cursory look-over.

What can suddenly cause trouble out of the blue is fuel quality, for which reason I have a gauge for the filter vacuum mounted in plain sight by the companionway and regularly glance at it as I go past. Do any of the wipers-and-pokers have something similar, and if not, why not?

Pete

Yep and one of my engine checks is to check the state of the fuel in the glass bowls of my Racors.

What this thread shows like many others is ,
there are a select of people on these forums , with all levels of experience, and all sizes of boats from dinghy sailors to weekend , cruisers and long distance sailors
And there always will be differences of opinion how things are to be done ,
from anchoring to buy the latest gadget .
What may be right for one in their circumstances can be unsuitable for another .

Some one with and old leaks engine or one that's Problematic , even a owner who's not confident of sorting out a problem ,will check it much more then some one who has a good maintain engine and knows his engine and a good understanding of engine .
You could ask .
How many climb their mast before going out to check for crack or a missing split pin .
I know that I only do it twice a year unless I have to go up for another reason and we do at the very less 3000 miles a season .
Or check there keel bolts , how many check the bottles screw every time they go out ,
The point is there no right or wrong answer to this question .
If it works for you great , keep doing it .

An electronic one is in a box waiting to get fitted, but as another point of failure it might stay in the box... Glass bowl gets checked along with the rest. Plus day tank fitted which gets fuel filtered from main tank as dirty fuel can indeed ruin your afternoon :encouragement:

Still can't see the down side of a quick once over that people get so tetchy about .

Actually masthead and rigging gets checked quite often if on the move - though quick check is just an add on to getting some nice piccys of the anchorage. Mast steps are great
