i was reading in mbm an article about how to check your water pump impellor,i wonder what lubricate you should use to put the impellor back into the housing as in the magazine article it warned you not to use vaseline, why is that? and the only lubricate i have got comes in a little tube with the new impellor which i would use only when i fit the new impellor

As others have said washing up liquid is fine.

What I normally use as it is a better lubricant, comes in an easy to use squirt type tube and works on squeaky/sticky piston seals of hand pumped toilets as well, is the lubricant used for slipping the big rubber joints onto plumbing pipes - can be bought from plumbers' merchants. Only a very little is required.

There is a proper rubber grease, used for assembling brake components, but use washing up liquid and not too much of that, or the impellor will slip out of your fingers and into the bilge!!

When I refitted mine at the start of the season I had the same problem. I considered trying to buy glycerin which I think is what Vlovo Penta supply but decided to see what I had on board. In the end I used a liquid soap, "Dove" to be precise, on the grounds that it should rinse away easily and be harmless. It worked well; the impellors slid in easily and the engine room now smells better too!

I am clearly going to have to check mine carefully again next year as I replaced it with spline grease on the shaft plines, the cover and around the pump casing.........

oh well I got 4 years and 800hrs out of the last one asn it was removed in perfect condition (apart from the terminal damage caused in removing it of course). The cover was however badly scored.
