Immaculate Westerly

I think you might need to clean your lens, unless t was foggy that day, but I know what you mean. A few years ago we found ourselves near a Westerly Pageant on Dartmouth town pier. Apart from a few modern additions, such as furling jib and sprayhood, it looked as if it had just come from a ‘70s boat show.

Yes didn’t realise that in bright sunlight. Annoying.

The problem isn't having an emaculate boat, it's finding the balance between using it and maintaining it. I'd hate for my boat to be emaculate as it would mean missing out on the 1000 or so miles we've done in the past two months. It'd be nice if it was a little bit cleaner and shinier though...

I know. About to sell and no longer immaculate after a few thousand miles. Hopefully a bit of gel coat repair will smarten things up.

Isn’t it a bit like having an immaculate Ford Anglia though? That was never a brilliant boat, just an affordable also ran. Historical interest perhaps, but I can’t see the point. Like Lusty says, you could spend all your time fettling instead of sailing. There’s a balance.

Well, perhaps, but just as the Anglia was a competent, if unexciting, car for its day, and allowed many a family to travel in, again for its day, reasonable comfort and security, the Centaur got many a family out on the water. No, not the most exciting of boats, but Dad probably doesn't want too much excitement when he's got Mum and a couple of young children along.

Actually, if I were on the lookout for a boat, now I'd definitely consider a Centaur. Neither Madame nor I are as fit or quick as we used to be, so a racy boat just isn't for us.

OTOH, not all Anglias were boring😁

what a weird response. Trying to figure the motivation.

My motivation to post originally was that seeing such a lovely boat made me smile. So I thought I’d share.

Your analogy is ridiculous. Many people would be proud of a concours ford anglia and many others would enjoy looking at it. Which is why they can sell for a price over 5000% higher than their original purchase price. Which is lots more than inflation.

But it’s not a concours boat that can only go to shows, someone is enjoying it. I’m delighted about.

So what was your motivation just to have a moan? Jealousy maybe.

And sorry to call it out because yours wasn’t the only rediculous reply. Some suggested the boat was too nice to sail! Why can you be proud of your boat?

it seems scuttlbutt is populated by a majority of miserable old barstewards that are content to bob round in shit heaps.

I was only spreading the joy. Wish I hadn’t bothered. You lot can go back to enjoying your Blake’s toilets and hair shirts.

To fit 5 berths, decent headroom and a proper diesel into 23ft LOA while retaining reasonable sailing credentials is an achievement. And to make and mantain it well enough that it still works and looks good after 50 years is worthy of note. Headlinings, osmosis and wobbly keels are part of the package. Equivalent boats today are usually sport/day boats with much more limited interior space, and without the coastal passage capability. Nowadays a "starter" cruiser like this is 10 feet longer!

I think it's lasting much better than the Ford Anglias I knew.

To be fair I think Chiaras Slave is at the opposite end of the spectrum.

I'm with you on this - there's one of these next to me in the yard at the moment, it looks a terribly lumpen thing to my eyes.

My point is that I’d understand a meticulous restoration on say, an S&S 34, or any other boat that is actually a joy to sail. But for me, all that’s missing from that is a couple of brass taps. I don’t think it’s ‘too nice to sail’, I think the owner has chucked thousands down the drain and for what? I wish him joy of it, if you’d like to undertake a similar project, there are hundreds of candidate boats mouldering away nearly forgotten in boatyards around the country. My boat isn’t that shiny, but it’s clean, everything works, including the toilet and the heating, and it has the best sails we can afford. And I’m certainly not jealous of a crappy old centuar. No matter how much he’s spent on polish.
