I have seen the letters IMHO used in loads of posts - excuse my ignorance but what does it mean?

it means "in my humble opinion" - you use it to "soften" the text. So, for example, my saying that your idea won't work can be taken quite badly and seems rude - but if I say "your idea won't work, imho" - then it reinforces that it is just my opinion.
