Had the discussion with my new Boss about 6 to 8 weeks off work and got a clear answer leaving me with a clear choice..........the job or JAC12. As it took me 7 months to get this job I have to put the family first.

So for now JAC12 is on the back burner again, unless the lottery or Ernie come up trumps in the next couple of months. Maybe JAC16?

on the surface a difficult decision, but deep down it is the best. Just think of the state of readiness and gadgetry that a couple more years years work will enable :)

I would like to do this year's trip too but I can't get the time off. I could probably get the boat ready if I went hammer and tongs at it but I sorta knew it wasn't likely to happen and have resigned myself to being out of the water all year getting some jobs done, then next year I want to launch, do some miles, iron out any new bugs and then in 2014 do the whole hog if possible.

Bad luck Peter. From your posts on this and the ECF I could tell how much you were looking forward to it.

Just as a thought it is at the very most just over 14 days sailing to get there in a 27 feet boat, give yourself 3 weeks to be on the safe side. The marina at Praia do Vittoria is very cheap, I paid Euros4/night in 2008 for my 27 feet boat. Leave Karouise there for a year and pick her up the following summer perhaps? If you could get your boat down to Plymouth in stages on weekends and just took 3 weeks you could do it perhaps. You might even find someone who is willing to bring a 27 feet long keeler back for you just for the experience - if you could trust them with your pride and joy.

You know, I just looked and it's cheap to have a lift out and storage there, or still cheap to stay afloat for a while.
It's even tempting me! It seems you can get a storage locker ashore there too which could be handy.
If only I had the Hydrovane I lust after or at least a windpilot! I still don't think I could get the time off though.

Also out

I have also had to withdraw from JAC12 for work reasons. I had temporary work until Christmas, and an idea it would be extended till Easter. An offer of steady work for all of this year was a very mixed blessing, but I have agreed to the work and am on the list for JAC14.

"If only I had the Hydrovane I lust after or at least a windpilot!" G12 it is not as essential as you think. Necessity is the mother of invention. I soon found how to use the sails for steering as well as moving when my wind vane packed up. See my post in reply to Self Steering thread. It steered me across the atlantic and back and costs nothing. You have two seasons to play around and see what works on your boat.

John - you are an evil man :D I can do without putting any new ideas into my head.

Not going to be able to concentrate at work today now!
