I\'m on my soapbox

Why on earth can't the political parties have their conferences at Westminster where security is already in place and no one is inconvenienced ? It's not as though they all have them in the same week, so that's no excuse.

Security for this year's Labour conference in Brighton started nearly three weeks ago. The road barriers have to be seen to be believed. God alone knows what they cost. There have been thousands of armed police here for three weeks. This week roads are closed, peoples cars are searched. Its a complete nightmare and impossible to carry on a normal life here.

It's even worse when the demonstrators get here. Yesterday we had the pro/anti hunting groups, together with a dead horse and two dead cows; and today was the anti-war demonstators.

The stupid thing is that with all the hundreds of thousands of pounds spent on security, they hold the conference in the centre and stay in the Grand, both of which buildings are right on the seafront, which means it would take just one boat, with one missile launcher to cause death and mayhem. There were no patrol boats out there (though [ah em!] knows what use they would be).

So to end where I started ............ don't you all think that these conferences should be held in Westminster instead of disrupting peoples lives in 3 uk cities each September/October - without mentioning the cost !!!

Re: I\'m on my soapbox

Tend to agree. I went to Brighton to meet up with a load of Biking mates on the Drive. Got stopped by plod and told to bugger off, so we ended up at Roedean.
Why they need these things at all I can't understand. All they seem to be is a pat on the back for each other. Labour say look how well we're doing. The Cons say what shite labour are and Kennedy's just a pratt. I say do away with all the confernces and spend the money where its needed.......clearing away dead horses praps.

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside........

And why shouldn't all our hardworking politicians have a seaside holiday? It's a free country isn't it?

You're just a spoilsport. You could always move to somewhere that doesn't host these events. ;-))

Oye, mind you own business. It's the only time of the year we can get the creeps out of our town and have it back to ourselves. Why should'nt you suffer the same infliction even if it's only temperary. For my money they can stay down there with you.

They are taking care of that with the hike in red diesel price so that not even a terrorist will be able to avoid a mobo and it just will not be the same trying to launch a rocket from a sailing boat and make a fast esacpe.....

Mp's came along because us upnorth needed to know wot was going on darn sarf. They needed to know about all the money we were making wiv cotton and steam negine thingies. So we sent the MP darn sarf to tell em. On an orse, cos thats wot wos High tec at the time. Now we have telephones fax internet, email and red buttons on telly. So we do not need MP's anymore. Wot we need is.

Richard and Judy doing a program about....Speed cameras..A few experts and a week of discussing. Then press button A or B. Its simple. Just vote in or out the bloody things, Next week could be about Iraq......No PM just some one from industry who has done it. He gets a go for a year. THen some other bum..../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I guess they bring much needed tourism revenue into Brighton/Blackpool at a quiet time of the year?

Re: correct

Hmm. I'm pretty sure that if you give the British Public a say-so on every aspect of life and legislation, we'll be saying goodbye to red diesel next week, rather than in 2 years' time.

(Runs for cover)

PS Surely the show should be presented by Paxo and John Humphreys? The Politicians wouldn't be able to get a word in edgeways. Result!

give the people what they want: not much

really? I mean - why would any of them vote for higher taxes on anything? They could start off voting for lower taxes. Paxo's on flippin 400k a year so he's first out, i reckon.

bout 10 years ago, i lived in isle of dogs, local coucil tor hamlets, and new counci lwas liberal, they sent out three options for 1) all lovely thing incl everytghing for £450 a year 2) not so much lovliness, £350 a year or 3) no free councilly things at all £250 a year. Result was the £250 things won. I wd've thought they get the msg and sack all the peeps who were otherwise gonn do all the lovely things, but they didnt. But shd have, really?

fact is, high tax pays for welfare state which is v old hat and all urgh 1947ish. New improved minimalism means get a job OR die. Which is fine realy, cos i mean, everyone learns how to not play on motorways OR die and not eat dogmuck OR die and not jump inthe sea (gosh, boatiness!) OR die too. Only reason we like NHS is that everyone thinks that the doctors would run off and work at macdonals if no NHS, whereas in fact they wd all work 3x as fast and earn loads of loot like that german chap who turned up and eliminated the waiting list somewhere (but didn't get any extra loot) .

Re: give the people what they want: not much

I don't think they would generally vote for higher taxes. Every survey ever carried out has the majority saying that they'd pay extra taxes for better healthcare, schools etc. but when it comes to the crunch, people don't want to pay more tax, full stop. However, I still think that if the Great British Public were asked whether moboers should pay the same tax as motorists, the majority would say yes, because those that know about it think, erroneously, that we're all mega-rich hooligans getting an unfair tax break (if only.......) and those that don't know about it would be horrified.

Don't think you and I are likely to agree about the Welfare State /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif. I have the great fortune to live in a place where the State Schools are excellent - all of them - and healthcare delivery on the NHS is generally pretty good. So, perhaps I have a skewed vision of the whole thing, but it's a demonstration of what quality public services should be able to deliver, but too often don't. The biggest irony of all is that it's in a prosperous and traditionally Tory part of the world (albeit with a Lib Dem MP and council at the moment) so should regard all of these things as a hissing and abomination.

Who said life was logical? /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: correct

Wot about that Carol Vodaman or who ever, from count down, She could do the sums and looks much prettier than Tony Bair. She could wear a bikini on voting nights, that would keep the attendance up. I cant see the need for all the MP's anymore, none of them ever mentioned speed cameras or Iraq, so whats the point of voting for any of them. Lets face it. Even if we get the voting wrong, we can always put it right next time round, but more importantly it will be a democracy and not the Stalinist state we have at the moment. House insurance seems to work quite well, so just have people insurance and keep the governments mits off the money. Anyway with my plan, there would be no government, just some folk doing what we tell em and maybe a figure head to wander round doing speeches and things.

Re: I\'m on my soapbox

Suggest they hold them in new scottish pity party building - the one that was to cost 40 million but now costs about 500 squillions - and for what?? For a few million people in scotland being 'run' by a bunch of tossers - who in turn take part of their lead from westminster anyway, which in turn is also run by a bunch of scots - its a complete waste of money and a national joke. Yes, they could send all the scottish ministers to brighton for a week and hold the conferences in edinburgh instead - then that would be imposing our problems onto the good folks from brighton........ not fair - -what else could we do with our scottish ministers??? We could send them to france. Thats it.

<hr width=100% size=1>What does this mean then?

Re: Surveys

Q Would you rather
a) pay more tax
b) die of cancer
c) receive treatment in Somalia

First rule of surveys - decide upon the answer you want BEFORE setting questions
