I'm moving to Portsmouth! Any advice?

Welcome to Portsmouth! Have you thought about (or even heard about) Port Solent Yacht Club? We have no clubhouse (so we keep membership costs down to £25 a year). In 2013 we have 13 events ranging from a day-sail through weekends to a 2-week summer cruise. For social events and impromptu gatherings we use one of the many bars or restaurants in Port Solent. Quite a few members of the Club welcome non-boat-owning members as crew on anything from weekends to ocean passages. I've been a member for 18 years and have had great fun made many friends through PSYC. Take a look at our website www.psyc.uk.com

Gosport itself is a bit scruffy (sorry Gosport) and the A32 into it from Fareham is dire.

It is like Portsmouth which believe it or not is an island and has very heavy traffic flows in peak periods with only one or two roads in.

Hill head is nice and there's a little sailing club there with a tiny and shallow harbour which most of the boats in the Solent don't know about. (Too shallow and not for anything much over 26'.

Great access to the sea from Gosport although the mouth can also get pretty busy what with Sunday yotties, ferries, warships etc.

Good luck with it all.

Some years ago I read about someone circumnavigating Pompey by small boat. Inevitably, after a pub discussion about it with my oppo Mark, the next day we borrowed a Gemini rib from HMS Dolphin pier head and reenacted the voyage either side of HW. Fun trip, except the tunnel bit up by the motorway. There are Things That Live in there.

Oh, no.1 grandson attends Bay House, very good school. All roads into Gods Port (our haven) are overchoked, if you gonna work in Gosport its best to live there. Alverstoke is very tidy.

Loads of info here thanks. My first thought was indeed to live in Alverstoke but it would not be convenient for other members of the family. We need to be close to a train station so older teenagers can get about to their various activities without relying on parent taxi and I am happy to travel to work via train to Portsmouth Harbour and Gosport Ferry. Have been warned about the traffic situation. Identifying schools that are good but not so oversubscribed that places are impossible to get into is the key factor which rules out Wildern or Thornden so the admissions people tell me. Cams Hill or Springfield seem more hopeful. Bit of a minefield all around.
I will check out all the yacht clubs recommended. Initial thought is to do Yachtmaster theory at night school and get partner to do Day Skipper so we can build up some miles and get to know our way around the solent before thinking about eventual boat purchase ourselves. Any good sea school recommendations?

John Clark who has run Team Sailing out of Haslar for ages is very good. Also Stewart (Tommy) Cooper who has Commodore Yachting round at Gosport Marina.

Dream or Two are a good Gosport based sailing school, particularly female friendly.

BTW, I am also moving to the Portsmouth area, and although my circumstances are completely different to the OPs this is a very useful thread.

Cosham or Drayton are not bad places but, if you're working in Gosport, then why not consider Alverstoke or Lee-on-Solent? Travel into Gosport may be easier. SWMBO lived in Gosport years ago & I remember the A35 at rush hour - horrible. If you live east then the ferry is really the only option. But, you still have to get to the ferry. If you do live in Cosham or Drayton & use the ferry, you will need to take the train to the Hard. Don't consider using a car. Parking close to the Hard isn't that good & it can take for ever to get in & out of the city at rush hour. Parking close to Cosham station isn't that good either so it would be good to be close to the station.

For dinghy sailing Stokes Bay SC is reasonable. I was a member there years ago. There's no tidal restriction which can be a problem in some of the clubs in the harbours.

There is also a bus dedicated road, for the route between fareham & Gosport, so avoiding the need to get into Portsmouth for the ferry.

Correct A32 not 35 as I said. And although I officially become an old fart of 50 this year, im still a bit young for the Austin A35.

Worth looking at the busses from Fareham down the new bus track.

If you live right in Gosport though, The new Priddys Hard development loos reasonable and its close to the ferry to get the kids to Portsmouth trains via the ferry. Why not do it the other way round, live n Gosport & travel out when you need to rather than travel in every day.

Good luck in your move.

If you do any Big boat training then take a look at Heave 2. Pete who runs it is a mate of mine though so have to declare a passing interest.

Having worked in North Harbour (IBM) on a number of occasions my impression of Cosham was that is not especially salubrious. Not especially bad but just not a place I found particularly attractive. Could be me being unjustifiably snobbish or a I may have formed a wrong impression but that's my t'uppenorth. On the other hand the South Coast can be a very expensive area to live and tends to go from one extreme to the other very quickly. I've never found an unfriendly sailing club or marina anywhere between Chichester and Portland though some are family orientated and sensibly priced than others.

Totally agree with others here.
We live in the area mentioned (north east of Portsmouth) but if I had regular work in Gosport it would not be my first choice.
Farlington & Drayton are good areas as they are catchment for Springfields school - (probably) the best comp in Portsmouth area.

...and not only that but you're also in the catchment area for Langstone Sailing Club (which happens to be my club :D) as well! Bonus!

PS. We're RYA certified for training - I did my Day Skipper and Coastal theory at the cub over the last two winters..

For work in Gosport, I would definitely look at living west (Alverstoke, Lee or Stubbington/Hill Head). Sailing clubs include Stokes Bay, Lee, Seafarers, and Hill Head. I have lived in Head Head or Stubbington for nearly 25 years and whilst we dont have kids back in the early days the Crofton Schools were scoring highly for being local catchment and educational standards.

Both Crofton (Stubbington) and Bay House continue to have good reputations, our kids went to Crofton followed by St Vincents College. We moved into Gosport town center to be near the yacht and enjoy living in the town. Great Saturday market for fresh fruit, veg and meat. Do consider Gosport Cruising Club or the civil service club civil service club (POG) if eligible.

I see no one's thought to mention Hardway Sailing club. They were (and probably still are) a great bunch. When I started sailing from the harbour and had a swinging mooring, Hardway was the nearest slip for me to launch the dinghy and the club members were always ready to lend a hand to a newby or give advice. It's a drag from the ferry though.

The Lee-on-Solent area is builder central just now but there's little infrastructure development. The A32 just gets worse and commuting in either direction by road is a nightmare. The express bus from Fareham's not that good either, despite the dedicated roadworks.

The M27 is regularly choked at commuting time between Fareham and Southampton, largely due to the poor road system and the Segenswoth (Fareham West) exit having to serve the whole area from Lee to Warsash on the Eastern side of the Hamble.

The bus service from Cosham to the ferry is reliable and frequent during the day, the further you go out to Farlington/Drayton the more difficult it becomes, you might find it better to look towards Widley or Purbrook to the north, it's a 15minute bus service up and down the A3. Trains from Havant are frequent and terminate at the Ferry, too so you might look to Langstone or Emsworth if you've got the geldt and a shoal draft craft.

Why would you want to move to Gosport or Southampton ? Are you mad , Gosport is a dump full of out of work matloes and junkies. Southampton is no better.

Well there must be a few jobs going in Gosport since they've given me one of them. ;)

Just remember that the housing density of Portsmouth is second only to London.
Having said that there are some really nice areas in Southsea and working north.
The ex naval housing stuff just north along Gosport's eastern side is going to be ( already is) posh, the 24h passenger ferry makes it popular commuting, Portsmouth grammer school is what you want academically and there is a girls one good @6 form level, both in Southsea.
