I\'m looking for...

... a mounting bracket.

What I want is a drop-in lift out type of thing. I have one that holds my instrument panel & it looks a bit like this (ignore the dots - the *#*&4@ forum software takes out spaces!):
........................... _____
Removable bit:....... \..... /
.............................\__/

Fixed bit:.............|\..... /|
.........................|_\ _/_|

The mating adges are bevelled so they hold together.

It doesn't have to be this design, but does need to be fairly tough, but easy to put on & take off, and the fixed bit mustn't stick out too far as it will be going on the cockpit side and if it does, it'll bite our backs at G&T time!

Any suggestions?

I understand what you want, couldnt it be made from a three pices of ply, and some aluninium to stop it coming out, cut the ply to the shape and put some thin aluninium on the front, to stop the panel coming out? wouldnt stick out far atall.

It could, and that's plan b if I can't find something for a sensible price, but my DIY skills will produce something that's strong, but rather lacking in the beauty department. The Admiral has a well developed sense of the aesthetic...

Thinking outside the box for a moment, I know exactly what you are after and they are as hard to find as rocking horse shit, however what about stainless steel flush mounts? I picked up some a few years ago in an ironmongers (a REAL ironmongers - not B&Q).

Thinking really far outside the box - what about trying Raymarine? They used to use them for mounting the AH1000 control unit - might still have some spares in stock - long shot I know but....

I know what you mean - my old boat had a compass that slotted into one of those. Never seen them for sale. I have seen heavy duty sticky-back velcro that could support something quite heavy. Just a thought.

Come to mention it - I've got the bit that fixes to the coaming which is redundant and I haven't taken off. Be pleased to let you have it. Maybe you could then cobble up the other bit. PM me if you want it.

Re: I\'m looking for...

The idea of going to Raymarine made me chuckle 'cos, as a confirmed tightwad, I don't want to pay £50 for the side-on mounting for my autohelm. so I've made a wooden bracket and was looking for an easy-fit easy-off mounting system.

MoodSabre, I could well be interested if I can't come up with the complete item, thanks.

Re: I\'m looking for...

The Sowester / Heath grid compass had a similar mounting (in plastic) as did some Sestrel compasses (in brass )

I might have both of the parts you're lookng for in my "treasure chest" of "previously enjoyed" bits. I'll have a look this w/e and PM you if I can find them. Free to a good home if they're there.

Looks like an older belt type driven Autohelm control unit mounting.
Plenty of those about, no longer functioning.
Suggest you put out a request for one.
Take offf the controller and use the backplate.

Sorry for the late reply, been busy boating and swimming around lately... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
That's just a matter of using an ascii characters which shows like a blanks, but actually isn't.
Can't tell you exaxtly 'cause I'm not on my pc, by heart I'd say ascii 250.

[/ QUOTE ]Or you could use any character you like - but select white for the font color. Might be easier?

Re: I\'m looking for...

Easier... maybe, but that wouldn't work for anyone who might have changed the colours setup in their profile.
Btw, the fake blank was ascii 160, not 250.
