Hi Rob,
This thread is like a roller coaster :giggle:
I can feel your pain with the decisions. Im in a loosely similar buying position but defintely leaning in the direction of MAB rather than AWB but anything that keeps the water out and you in should be a positive as im learning ?

I fully agree with everyone voicing the do it now approach. We could be bit by a bus or a life changing diagnosis tomorrow.
Ive decided to quit work and take a year or 2 out and start on my bucket list while im still able.

Whatever your decision, fair winds.

I certainly know of one Fulmar in Largs for sale that has been owned only one person and it has been looked after by him throughout its life and it is in very good condition, having been on it a couple of times. If this year has shown us anything, it has shown us that you cannot predict the future. Our yacht has certainly been a great blessing from both a physical and mental viewpoint over the last 2 years, so just get out there and go sailing NOW (OK wait until it has warmed up a bit).

Tailor Maid? ... I remember that boat name from my yoof, but I'm sure it was a MoBo in the 80s ... Penny Lane was another one that stuck for some reason... and then there was Minty, a monstrosity in mint green based in Kip ... long before the chimney was knocked down.

In 5 years time the ideal 40' dreamboat turns up and his offer is accepted leaving the OP with 2 boats and expenses for both until he cracks and gives the 1st one away for a desultory price. Or ............

At the risk of sounding opportunistic, if anyone is in this situation with a 28-34 foot boat that is turn-key ready to use, I might be able to assist :giggle:

Aha but you have the perfect job. You can vicariously buy and sell boats and make money... ?
You don't have to be in a job like John to adopt his maxim. You might get to a point in life where you have the money to indulge your fantasies or simply buy a boat/car/plane or whatever that you fancy and enjoy without worrying about money. The challenge is keeping yourself sufficiently fit to get the enjoyment out of it.

= Typhoon
…will just take some waiting, watching, and saving up!

(There’s one on our new pontoon so I’ve been reacquainting myself with what will surely always be the ‘best’ performance Westerly - and should be for as much as +50% what our 41’ AWB might fetch)

Westerly Typhoon for sale UK, Westerly boats for sale, Westerly used boat sales, Westerly Sailing Yachts For Sale 1991 Westerly Typhoon 37 - Apollo Duck

Hmmmm. Headlining needs completely doing. Original Perkins engine. Needs new sails. Maybe new uplholstery. New standing and running rigging. New electronics.......

On sale for 45k. 35k for the upgrades?!?!

Interesting to see how long it is on the market at this price!

Looks like bad value to me compared to a 10 year younger bigger boat!

Look at what else you can buy for the same money - not what you could buy for twice the amount!

That is 'old money' for a Typhoon (we were seriously in the market for one 2017-19ish...) so there must be a reason for it. The example a few boats down from us has had a major refit (I think even a new mast) and does look an absolute 'weapon' as a result!

I thought is was an ok asking price as well, considering how prices have moved. It's the sort of boat you are looking for if your capital is limited and want to upgrade out of income as you go along, perhaps with an eye on a big trip or retirement, as the OP has outlined.

Abstract ideas about what the boat needs are easy to play unless the boat is brand new and loaded off the list of extras. Unless that Westerly has some hidden problems, it may well be used almost as it is.
At a further discount it could be a good buy, though none of us know what the future holds.

Tranona is right to point out that if you double your budget things always look different. The other point is that they are two boats aimed at very different markets, I'm not convinced that many experienced people would have both the Moody and the Typhoon on the same shopping list.
I think what I am struggling to say is that if you look at boat purchase too much in terms of perceived value you could end up with an brilliant bargain that you don't like very much.

...especially for the Solent! I must say, I'm rather taken by it. Presuming nothing major is 'broken' (it doesn't look it), and you can put up with (or sort) the headlining, surely a few years' Solent sailing could be had without needing major outlays (providing the 2008 rig can be insured)? Or chuck it on a transport and get it where you need it.

The Typhoon is an excellent sailing boat, probably the best that Westerly built. It was no tame cruising boat, but a fast cruiser racer. If one had been available 8 years ago, I would probably have bought it in preference to my Fulmar. These 2 quotes sum up the Typhoon on the Westerly Wiki, Typhoon 37 - Westerly-Wiki

" Marry a Fulmar by all means but get a Typhoon as your mistress!" to quote The Westerly Owners Association Definitive Guides

The Typhoon doesn't have the usual Westerly roominess and space you would expect from a Westerly of this size, but this is a beautiful boat to sail. Very light on the helm, wonderfully responsive and fast. More than that, it gives that magic thrill when you know you're on a special boat!

Typhoons are rare boats as only 40 were built. So anyone wanting a fine sailing boat will certainly get a distinctive boat full of pedigree from this Ed Dubois design.
