I\'m going back to being miserable.....

I am fed up with being ignored as I provide a cheery wave to other boaters out on the Solent. This weekend was the last straw as most of the boats I waved to just seemed to look through me.

Am I breaking some sort of ancient mariner etiquete or am I simply unpopular?

Anyway I quite like being miserable and can be pretty good at it too.........

:-(

It's not you Nick. In 6 years of solent/France boating I have found that invariably (by which I mean there are about 10% exceptions) yachties dont wave and mobos do.

That's of course when I'm in a mobo. When I used to sail a Jeanneau in the solent yachties would wave back. Mobos would too, only with a surprised look on their faces!

Come down to Guernsey as everyone and I mean everyone will wave back to you even the crapeauds from Jersey!

The only people that dont wave are the visiting raggies. but some of those occasionally mnage a half hearted effort.

Re: non-pc

hm ,i get hiya waving from lots of other boats in the solent, power and sail, far more than in the med where we are relatively teeny. The amount of waving is directly proportional to how much peeps are looking, so yotties wave at each other, and esp at big nice yots that they tend to spot and look at. Likewise power peeps wave, and esp at bigger powerboats. IMHO.

Now now

Come on Deborah, you're sounding more and more like that dreadful northerner hlb, it's all been much more civilized recently since he's been keeping his big trap shut. And I know he doesn't wave at raggies, he's far too busy trying to run em down.

How are things in the ditch crawling world? I hear hlb is now having a bow thruster fitted to MF. How things change...........

And may I ask how much of a bloody wake were you throwing up at the time and how close were you to the raggies just before you cut across their bows?

Now diving for cover/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Have you considered getting one of those big foam hands that you get at footie matches? That might help

Don't worry Nick - I'll wave at you. Particularly in Portsmouth Harbour! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif. Past my written exam for full coxswain qualification. Anyway you could never really be miserable - you're too nice a bloke for that.

Re: I\'m going back to being miserable.....

Hi Nick

Don't lose faith in your fellow men.... Hard sometimes but some people are simply rude and have no spirit of friendship. What goes around comes around - one day these people may need help and then they will have to wave!! In the 1960's I used to drive ocean going ships in many parts of the world and had the opportunity to be waved at or wave to when entering/leaving port. Even then on a large vessel, there were people who acted just the same way!!

Keep waving and enjoy the fact that you are giving out the good stuff.

Re: I\'m going back to being miserable.....

Don't lose heart, we wave at everybody, say good morning (etc) to anyone in reasonable hailing distance, including those on shore / bridges.

Response is unpredictable and not dependent on whether the respondent is in a similar type of boat.

It's hard work when the response is poor, but very rewarding when you get a smile and a jolly comment in return.

The snotty ones give great pleasure when the foul up their rope handling and stuff the lockside on the way in / out. haha.

I'm not quite ready for the funny farm, but do feel we all have to lighten up, everybody is so cocooned in ther own (little) environment and needs to be dragged out of it when occasion dictates.

It may be that non responders feel it infra dig to be waved at or that the waver is potty; but you have to be potty to do anything with boating?

So if any of you are going to Henley in your immaculate slipper launch for the fireworks (really good show last year), have a care for a nutter in a blue narrowboat. I won't be wearing a boater or a blazer, just a well used floppy hat and well used jeans. Take care though, I get quite agressive on the old sound signals if you cut me up.
