Hello,

I've booked a week bareboat charter from Mali Losinj at the very end of May and was thinking of spending our first night there. (I've booked an early check in at 2pm) I've seen it from the land, of course, twice. Has anyone stopped there? Any chance of mooring on the quay? Any issues about using the channel, other than the obvious that there's no shelter in a Bura? Advice gatefully received, thanks.

Mooring at the quay is unlikely as the ferry stops there and I think there's not a lot of depth on the side (but I may be wrong). However, there are loads of moorings along the channel and are safe even in a bora. My preferred mooring is in front of the old Venetian fort on Sv. Petar. At the end of May, you will be able to pick and choose. At the northern end, the water is shallower and you can see the sandy bottom and fish, which is nice. The channel itself is deep and safe at the centre; no issues there. A lovely lunchtime stop can be had at anchor on the eastern side of the southern tip of Male Orjule east of the southern end of Losinj; there is a little isle there that forms a sort of shallow infinity pool protected by a rocky bar on the northern side. Very pleasant (but not with a bora!).

Do you have reasons for heading S from Mali Losinj?
If not, for overnighting at anchor, the bays on the E coast of Unije were among my favourite spots, in that area.
Much wilder and with no restaurants (at least up to the early noughties), but that's part of what made then lovely.
There were good reasons why I spent a whole decade cruising the Croatian archipelago, but restaurants were not among them - with just a few exceptions...

Took a look in there 5 years ago, in a moderate bora NE6-7. It was fairly sheltered but , in August, quite crowded given the conditions, so we moved on to Mali Losinj. (They are only about 10 miles apart so a very short day-sail).

Like MapisM, I like the charming villages and harbours of the Istria peninsula to the north. There is good cruising around the islands to the south, plenty of anchorages, but the villages are less obviously attractive. However, it is well worth visiting Zadar, though the marina there is rather expensive. It would be great to visit the Krka river further south, with its waterfalls, but that is just a bit far for a week's charter from Losinj.

Hello, Yes, I know Zadar well and have stayed there twice in the marina. I agree about Krka too and would go there if taking friends who had not been before. We had a negative experience there about 5 years ago, having got to the marina at Skradin. We were kept awake at night by a bunch of noisy drunken polish vermin in a nearby boat. Decided not to risk it again ourselves. I sometimes wish I had a waterproof cordless drill to make a hole in their hull.

It’s the Med not a library - if you go to a marina in Summer then you should expect partying boats with loud music and talking until dawn. If you had some life in you you could be one of them too. Plenty of secluded anchorage in Croatia so chill out if you decide to go to the only marina for the biggest tourist attraction on the coast.

Strangely, I don't regard getting pissed, screwing on the deck and generally annoying other people as something I want to do. I have a perfectly adequate life without that, thanks. It hasn't happened anywhere else. Perhaps it's just the P(r)oles?

Gosh - well everyone is different.
Enjoy your sobriety just don’t expect it everywhere in the Eastern Med in high season which is the glorious world sailing party centre.

EDIT - and your anti-Polish insults are ugly and off putting.

It happens. Or you find yourself parked too close to an all-night club blasting out third-rate pop. (The fewer the customers, the more they turn up the volume). The only choice is to move on. At least that is possible at Skradin where one can easily go and anchor out in the river opposite. I've not had a problem there myself. Croatia seems better than Greece in that respect.

Indeed: one more reason to get a caravan instead. And they are cheaper to buy and run.

I'm with Povremeni on this: just because it's summer and holiday time is no excuse for selfish behaviour that pays no regard to your neighbours.
Thanks- I'm ignoring the person who feels it's OK to disturb others on the grounds one is on holiday. So he can rant at me all he wants. ( I assume he will)

I t hink that Croatia, and many of its visitors, is a pretty civilised place.
