Just had a reply to an email enquiring about supplying replacement Ni-Cad battery Pack for my hand held VHF and this was the answer:
"Hi ,
It is against the law to supply Ni-Cads in the UK now , the best we are able
to offer are 1200 mAh NiMH packs . We assume that they are to rows of 4 side
by side with a pair of wires ( :::: = ), similar to that in brackets .
If this is so then you need to call 01543 683122 between 0900 and 1700 Hrs
Monday to Friday with your order and card details .

So how can BIG manufacturers sell cordless tools with Ni-Cad batteries but I can't get a replacement Ni-Cad pack from a small supplier(when phoned said that there were some 'exceptions') ?
Seems crazy to me - over to the forums comments. I did order a couple of NiMh packs at a reasonable price though.

Ni-CAD are very old technology in the rechargable battery stakes. They have been overtaken by NiMHi and latterly by Li-ion. Ni-CAD batteries suffer from a recharge memory, if you only let them discharge say by 50% and then recharge then over a short time the total capacity of the battery becomes the portion that has been used, ie 50% of orginal. The newer types are much less susceptable to this and Li-ion do not suffer at all.
In summary, go for the newer ones far better.

I don't believe they can. Cadmium has been banned in batteries for quite a while now.

Well, I popped into B&Q earlier to look at routers as mine has gone bellyup and looked at the cordless drills and all the manufacturers, Bosch, B&D, DeWalt. Hitachi, Ryobi and the B&Q own makes all offer drills with Ni-Cad or at a higher price with Li-Ion batteries. I was quite taken by teh Ryobi range but the Li-Ion battery is 4 times the price of the Ni-Cad, but did have a multifunction charger and tools at a reasonable price.
I did in fact order a couple of NiMhi battery packs from the people I spoke to.

Anyone with an old battery pack that needs replacing but is no longer available can use this company.

Usual disclaimers, no connection, I am simply a satisfied customer, they rebuilt the nicad pack on my old h/h VHF with Nimhs and it is better than new for a fraction of the cost.

That's the people I've ordered from, reasonable price and glad you recommend them, that makes me feel happier!

Ni-Cad or Ni-Mh

Ni-mh memory was one disadvantage. The other not mentioned here is capacity loss over long periods. So for eg. a flashlight being used occasionaly, not so good as the newer types.
