Hello all,

was in IKEA last week getting some bits and bobs and lots of wine/water glasses which seem to disappear at an alarming rate when I saw this Rug. Looks like my plan to have teak or some other wood laid properly on the salon floor is a no-no as I have 4 bleeding hatches to the engines and it's going to be a pain to do seal and keep engine noise down.
So was thinking that with a decent sub-thingy wotsit fairly thick and rubbery, I could kill two birds with one stone and have a some soundproofing and decent looking and v.cheap natural fabric to walk on, not bothered with sand or water and every couple of years bin it.
Am I missing something or is this doable?

Mind, I can access the engines from the aft deck hatch so no need to roll them up and lift the salon hatches under normal use, and hopefully wont need to do anything during the summer months we're going to be onboard (fingers crossed and all that...)

cheers

V.

Can't really comment on the IKEA rug, but huge commiserations for losing some of your lifetime there! On our Azi, engine checks are done from the door in the lazerette, sounds a bit like Mitos. There is a huge hatch in the saloon floor, plus a smaller one, then access below the seat lockers. I use these when doing the servicing. Raf has a fitted carpet that rolls out the way when using the hatches. Of course our flooring is grp, where yours will be wood, but I don't think that will make much difference.

Hi Vas,
I'm a big fan of teac or other proper wood flooring in the saloon. I don't like carpet in there (in the cabins its OK)
it makes the saloon more high class imo, especially a vintage boat like yours and mine ;-)
regarding the engine room hatches, I would leave very small seams in the wood,
and find a way to fix / screw the hatches as much as possible invisible (acces from underneath ?)

even the nicest wooden floor, can cope with a nice rug imo, and makes the room more cosy
we choose a rather expensive "Perletta" but a Ikea model could do very good also

regarding sound proofing, the rug can add a bit of vibration damping, but does only 1 or 2 dB noise reduction. (hardly noticeable)
you need to add weight, fe wood flooring,
or rubber mats under the ceiling of the engine room
