Not always. A night like that I challenge you to find a lifeboatman who would prefer to be trying to rescue/recover a casualty than watching the waves on the TV. Yes it is satisfying when you have a good result to a shout - but we see lots of the rest too...often needlessly. We'd rather go without, thanks.
Agreed with other poster tho - sensible precautions (shore spotter/group/etc), an understanding of the lack of usual rescue facilities - and go ride the big one!
