This weekend the overloaded public slip in Pwllheli was congested with loads of big ribs (20ft plus, 200hp engines) they cruised up and down, some slow, some fast, (why is it that the tossers who break the speed limits have no necks, red faces and shaven heads?)

Later on saw them out by the St Tuds islands, must have been about 25 of them, making lots of noise etc, dont know what they were upto.

Any way come back to the harbour after a super hot day and there they all are, queuing up to get back on their trailers. the tide was right out and they were blocking the way to my berth.

the tide has just turned so have got it up my chuff and once i start to commit have to keep going, narrow bit etc, cant get to close to the beach.

gentle ahoy to the no neck blocking my way and all we get back is a shrug and so what, swmbo has to start explaining to no neck and his totty that we cant go outside him because of depth etc.

By this time i had decided that i would have to shoulder him out of the way, he finally moved, his prop wash started to push me towards the trots and i had to accelerate to get some rudder wash etc, anyway it all worked out.

Near by is a pontoon to the boatyard where my binlids had left their 10ft rib while we went out (we pay the yard to use their slip, moor on the pontoon and park the rib during the summer.

There is big signs everywhere saying for use of customers only), another no neck was undoing it and moving it, i got in my dinghy and went to challenge him.

He had wrapped a ski line thru my fabric handles, he had lost my extension to my painter and had generally got it all in a knotted mess. i was furious and let him know and told him in no uncertain terms to put my boat back.

He did eventually but was full of it, sarfener he was, couldnt see what was wrong etc etc totally couldnt give a [--word removed--], he wanted the space and couldnt care less.

Turned out there had been some sort of rally with peeps from all over the country.

Question, am i a cranky old sod or should we just roll over and let people like this walk all over us?

Cranky who knows?
But shorter sentences and a few presses of the return key would make reading it a bit easier!

Excellent rant feeling better now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

cheers Joe

I'm in agreement. We have a proper RIB (ageless Humber Attaque - faded orange, smells of petrol) and I have to say that there is a number of RIB users that may have moved up the ladder from PWC that have very little regard for other vessels. Unfortunately you get this minority with just about every type of vessel.

It doesn't matter whether it's a yacht, a RIB, a Jetski or a gin palace. Most folks are amiable and conscientious but you always get the odd prat.

Bagpuss - you appear to be making huge generalisations.

Skipper stu. This was an organised event. I had no direct involvement of it - but I am aware of the effort that went into the planning and familiar with a number of the participants via discussion boards similar to yours.

I am sure that the intention wasn't to upset you. The good news is that the other 51 weekends of the year there wont be this many ribs in "your" /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif stretch of water.

I believe the planning did involve discussions with the Harbour Master. There were instructions given on where to go and not go (which pontoons etc) as well as about speed limits. I wasn't there - maybe someone ignored them. With 30+ boats there it must have been a spectacle. Perhaps you will be more tolerant of other boat users in the future. Perhaps not, perhaps you are one of those people who like to rant, and think they are right and everyone else is wrong.

Perhaps its this sort of attitude that makes people feel that yachties are all stuck up rich idiots - but I wouldn't make generalisations like that.

Re: Ignorant Rib Drivers in Perihelia

A reasonable response until you couldn't resist the silly comment in your last line.

Skipper Stu has been posting here long enough for us to know he doesn't get wound up unnecessarily. It sounds like the rally was supported by a bunch of idiots who couldn't care less about others.

Actually (although I probably didn't put it too well) I was implying that within every type of boat class there may be a few that can (inadvertantly or otherwise) cause problems, either through naivety, outside elements or ineptitude. It is not limited to RIBs.

I wasn't suggesting for a minute that the event was anything other than well organised.

Apologies all round for any inaccuracies

That's rich ...
from SkipperStu's post it would appear that at least one Rib (and driver) was blocking the navigable channel and just shrugged at reasonable requests to clear the path.

As for moving another boat - there is little excuse to move someone elses boat unless it is tied to your property or blocking a public access - even then it should be done with care and attention...

You'll notice that SS said some ribs were fast - others slow - clearly stating that not all Ribs were acting in an inconsiderate manner...

It doesn't matter how much organisation has gone behind an event - good manners and tollerance from all on the water ensures a good time can be had by all usually with little inconveiance.

I don't know why you think it was silly... ...i was simply pointing out that one persons actions can reflect on a whole group when it is not necessarily true

Skipper stu where do buy your exclusive rights to Pwllheli harbour?? was it expensive?

I've come across these rib people before and on each occassion they have been very helpful the more people that get out in boats SAFELY the better you'r getting us Yotties a bad name

I don't know the geography - but it sounded more like he was in the middle of the moorings than the navigable channel.

I don't suppose any yachts will be getting in anyones way at cowes week!

No my point was that this wasn't likely to be a regular occurace and wasn't some random happening. Perhaps if SS had tried civil conversation with the ribbers or the Boat Club he would have understood this!

Absolutely - not seen any evidence that the ribbers were intollerant - their feedback from the weekend (on another site) has been nothing but positive. SS obviously didn't leave a lasting impression! I do see evidence of one sailor getting on his high horse.

Didn't know he claimed exclusive rights - just reasonable access and common courtesy from other waterusers ... which was not forthcomming from 2 ppl from the party ...

You're obviously reading a different post then - go back and read it again. A navigable channel doesn't have to be marked with buoys/posts ...

We all have to start somewhere... ...I doubt anyone was intentionally rude nor trying to cause trouble.

Your earlier post did not help by suggesting that the "fancier" ribs were in someway inferior (or their owners were) to you robust humber.

i was in the group and we had a great day i use Pwllheli all the time as i have a holiday home in chwilog and i pay up seasonally and hope that i boat responsibly

we were a large group it takes some organising to get all those boats out on the water at the same time

we were escorted out of the harbour on the saturday by the harbour patrol

yes some people may put a foot wrong especially in unfamiliar waters

But i am a family man and take my "boating,Ribbing" very seriously with as much safety as possible

i also do not take kindly to being called a "noneck"

Andy

the only time my rib goes over 30 is on the trailer !

I admit to having sped up the harbour whilst being pushed by a fishing boat (big Cat) and dually made my fellings felt with the harbour master

why did skipper_stu not do this as all boats were registered in advance of the event
