Why, oh why, do thoughless and inconsiderate boatowners feel that they are justified in running their engine/s first thing in the morning, when moored alongside or in close proximity to others.

The Folly this weekend saw a powerboat owner with very noisy outdrives running his engine for 45 minutes and totally filling nearby cabins with a blue & toxic haze, whilst just two boats further along, the inevitable Bavaria was showing equally antisocial tendancies.

Strangely, such behaviour is often, although not exclusively, allied to the inability of the owners to handle their boats competently. They arrive in a noisy demonstration of ineptitude that has all their new neighbours turning to to assist - their kindness being repaid by noise and fumes the next morning.

Perhaps the RYA could insist on a "responisible good neighbourliness" course, but then again.....

I agree that anything inconveniencing others in a boorish and insensitive manner is deplorable, on the other hand it's possible that his batteries were near flat and the wife wouldn't get up to cook breakfast unless the Eberspacher was kicked into life, and perhaps he knew where his sufferings would be minimised.

Running his engines without load for 45 minutes being a "bad thing" one can only assume he was under pressure from somewhere!

i agree, but am not sure that running the engines for a while prior to departure is universally known as a "bad thing". The wrongheaded logic i imagine is that if you plan a 1 hour trip, then running the engines for towards an hour beforehand "proves" that the engine can do it?

wasn\'t it Des Sleighthome

who recommended running the engine while ladies of a nervous disposition use the 'facilities'? Not in harbour, though. Eugh!

er, no it doesn't prove that at all, it proves the engine can run for one hour, but then of course to complete the trip it will need to run for 2 hours in total?

will probly run out of fuel cos its been running for an hour already...

I know what you mean, but I wonder when the boating community will learn that having a/a pair of engines running with no (or very little) load does them no good at all.

If you wanna warm up your engines before you get on the plane as it were, just potter about the harbour/river/whatever at low load before you set to sea.

But hey, if you want uneaven bearing wear, clogging injectors etc etc etc etc etc who am I to stop you!!

The good man from Sabre (back when I ran a Nelson) advised me to

"single up the mooring lines, start engines, test gears, drop lines and proceed to sea, at as near to cruising revs as was legally possible". He was quite emphatic that warming the engines through was absolutely the most damaging thing that could be done to big(ish) diesels.

Another excellent opportunity to have a dig at Bavaria owners, funny there seem to be loads of snobs on this forum who like to slate Bavarias but I've never met one at a marina.

I don't think he was slagging Bavs by saying they were 'inevitable' which is true - there are plenty around for good reasons. I read it he was slagging the owner for running his engines at an unsociable hour.

A touch sensitive perhaps today?

No, not a pop at a Bavaria. Look on the positive side - at least the engine was actually running, whether or not he could stop it is another matter.
The FACT is that it was a Bavaria, the motor boat was indistinguishable as a brand.

Might also have been because all Sabre owners know they smoke like hell until under load, so to being ready to shove off shows good-neighbour skills just as much as good engine management.

warming up big diesels......

You will never see a ship running her main engine (up to 12 cylinders, 96 cm bore, over 2 metre stroke, 72,000 hp, on the largest containerships) to warm it up, whilst alongside - very simple reason, it is direct coupled!
