Not many. As a former resident of la Bretagne I can tell you the Breton language has nothing like the state support in France that the Welsh does here. Breton is spoken in pockets in the west, whereas most people who have been to school in Montgomeryshire have a smattering of Welsh. My kids went to a Breton school and no-one in the entire establishment spoke a word of it. As a non Welsh/Breton speaker I should put my cards on the table... as far as I'm concerned any linguistic skill is worth acquiring and will repay with unexpected dividends - even a surprise bottle of vino collapso.

See below; I have never liked the name, which is a bit gimmicky, and I know a lot of Ancient Bretons who think that way too! I still think of it under the old name.

I guess you are right it would be nice to have a few knots of tide to help us along once in a while.
The only reason I mentioned the lack of tides is I come from Morecambe where sailing is a little tricky as the bay empties twice a day which can really spoil your day.

Antibes is the place to be. Sun, sea

You can catch that great south coast train link right into Italy. It is a fantastically beautiful ride.Stop off at a small fishing ports en-route for a little fish soup.

Antibes is the right mixture of bistro France and cosmo Nice, and Monaco. Failing that, move to Paris - its great.

Concerning France I lived in Granville, Cherbourg, La Baule, Bénodet...
Not much to be ad to Sybarite summary : South Brittany is definitely the Place you are looking for !
A perfect cruising area (islands, anchorages, fishing villages, rivers...).
Coast and country landscapes like Cornwall but sunnier... (I write that looking through a rainy window).
You'll feel at home : there's at least an "Irish pub" in most towns, 30 % of real estate in Center Brittany is bought by English people and you find cruisers from other Channel in most harbours.
If you want some more sun La Rochelle is an option with Ré and Oléron islands ! but IMHO Vendée coast is just sand, with a perfect jewel : Ile d'Yeu for a stopover.

Nice or Menton would suit me very well indeed but Menton would be a bit of a cheat as while technically France it's very very Italy. This area gives you great infrastructure and links with the UK and you can get to the ski slopes easily too. Great sailing early and late in the season and in high season you'd do what the locals do. Go elsewhere. La Turbie would be cool. You look down off the hill over Monte Carlo without the expense.

La Rochelle would suit pretty well too.

As would Auray.

Just do it and stop faffing around. Britanny is truly great place-the entire coastline from L'aberwrach down to La Rochelle offers nothing short of superb sailing. If you don't like it - move on. My advice - sail the coast for a couple of years then decide if want a land based situation. The trouble is deciding just where!
