If you\'ve sailed around Britain...

...which port of call was your favourite?

We had the good fortune to sail around this year and Westray, with its white sand beaches, wildlife, overly friendly people, scenery... I just want to get back there soon!

Probably Tobermory.

Boulogne was good too - yes, it's on the route

St Michael's mount is good but you need to be able to take the ground

Quiet parts of Chichester harbour

Scalloway, Shetlands. Best chip shop right the way round.

(PS I haven't actually done the whole thing in one, so my opinion can be safely ignored).

My circuits have all been through the Caledonian canal. That was the best bit. Some of course will say it's not a complete circumnavigation if you don't go round the north but we weren't interested in records, just cruising and visiting the mast builder in Inverness.

Grimsby doesn\'t help itself

I sailed to Grimsby for the first time this year. Not only does it look unappealing, but when when I left the marina alone to go shopping (I know - walk a mile through the armpit of the town) three young men made a feeble attempt to mug me. They were completely pissed but aggressive and it was all I could do to resist the temptation to give out a real hiding, it made me so angry. What a dump! I took a train from there to Sheffield for business and believe me arriving in Sheffield was like being in the Gare de Lyon or something after Grimsby.

Best haddock and chips for us were from Anstruther.
Had to miss out Barra due to the wind in the wrong direction and i couldn't be arsed to tack all the way, so we went from East Tarbet (Lewis) to Dunvegan (Skye) on a nice reach.
Couldn't get ashore at Tobermoray because the dinghy got holed in Broadford, sat on the boat all night till the early hours and a tide shift then sailed to Oban to loose £300 on a new one.
Lindisfarne was fantastic, able to take the ground so we anchored in the bay... Not fantastic for the priory or the castle though, but for the scenery at the back of the island and the Mead.

Funny thing, I was about to vote for Scalloway as well. Easily the most friendly club I've ever visited. Then I realised that we were both on the same boat at the time.

[/ QUOTE ]That proves it then. You've been around ... how many times?

Only halfway round. Harwich to Arisaig leaving Muckle Flugga to port. On other occasions Harwich to the Scillies and Oban to Anglesey, but never all round. Still think that Scalloway takes some beating.

For a harbour, I like East Loch Tarbet when it's not too busy.

Loch Eribol as an anchorage was pretty good - a real miles from anywhere experience.

Further south, Whitby and Port Erin.
