Why does it upset you so much. Why do you feel the need to try to dissuade them from buying something that most of us enjoy using on OUR boats.

Why does someone carrying a television really raise the hackles?

Why comment on something that obviously does not interest you?

Eh? Who are you referring to?

If your refering to the WS/D post earlier then I did not get the impression of anybody getting upset. I think it was a very valuable and educational post to see so many people of an opinion I was not predicting - I was expecting a lot more praise for a wind gadgets (maybe those in favour of the things were slow to come forward) - and that is why these forums are so useful - specially when they challenge recieved opinion!

Huh?

If you are referring to the wind instrument post. The first question was

1 What priority would you place on spending money on a WS&D indication

Most people replied that they would place a low priority. Are you complaining that people are holding the wrong opinion?!

I like my Christmas Tree

I love gadgets and must admit my Vega is sometimes like a Christmas Tree with all sorts. Next project is a Radar that I have had for 6 months, must fit this year. Still havent got AIS or a fridge. Will rectify both soon..... I want more toys and perhaps a bigger boat to put them on!

Not at all, but the chap had decided he wanted a WS&D and asked advice on which type, not whether he should buy one or not.

The same thing happens when someone comes on and asks which 12v TV should I buy, they do not expect a lecture in the virtues of 'getting away from it all'.

It does rattle my cage, but only because it is so predictable. I just wonder why so many on here are determined that everyone uses their boats to a set of bizarre old fart rules that follow no real sense.

For example, my chart plotter adds to my enjoyment, I can relax and let the electronics do the work for short hops. Yet by saying this, many on this forum will consider me delusional.

I think your point's fair enough as a general comment, but in the WS&D post, Airborne1's first question was 'What priority would you place on spending money on a WS&D indication?'

Presumably most people who answered felt qualified to answer that one but not the technical questions that followed precisely because they didn't own the equipment in question.

The original poster seemed quite accepting in the advice and as posted, seemed quite happy to spend his money on other gadgets. I think you are being a bit presumptious when you suggest some of us sail "to old fart rules" - we are not all luddites as you infer. I for one have many gadgets and would also love chart plotter - so might the original poster, who may now direct funds previously allocated to WS/D in a chart plotter direction.

Couldnt agree more.
The time has long gone where we have to follow the direction of the seagulls and seaweed to find where we are.
It really is about time some of these guys started getting used to the 21st century.
Of course for some people what really lies behind it all is technophobia.
These are the gallant few who dont yet have digital TV, listen to radio four as a religion, dont know really how to operate a VCR etc.
But as they say it takes all sorts...although like you I do wish that they would leave those of us who want to operate PC's and other goodies on our boats alone, rather than treating us as lepers who have just broken Neptunes first rule of seamanship.

Steve.

I admit, I listen to radio 4 and have done for very many years, that does not mean that I feel the need to convert the rest of you heathens!

Relax my friend, we come in all shapes and sizes, and none of us has the right to enforce our convictions on others, but we do have the right to disagree!

but we do have the right to disagree!

Absolutely, and this was mine...

Also, I do listen regularly to Radio 4 until gardeners question time or the archers comes on. Though, the repeated news every 30 minutes (it seems) can drive you nuts after a few hours.

This isn't just the WS&D thread, but the regular doom slayers of all things electronic on board. I watch TV and movies when relaxing. I also have DVD's full of radio 4 plays and comedy such as the Navy Lark, round the horn, dad's army, hitchhikers etc. New technology has opened up old time (ish) listening to me, I have about a thousand I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again.

It is about evolving..
