This time of year, I would do the clockwise route.
If the weather isn't up to much - just 'do' the IOW.
With this High coming in then - Honfleur, St Vaast, Cherbourg
then if it's still holding pop down to the CI's . . . then I wake up.

Get up the E. coast just as fast as you can . . . there's nowhere worth stopping, although if you fancy a wild weekend I recommend Hartlepool.

If ou have loads of time go Northabout and take in the Orkneys. Otherwise, head through the Caley Canal.

Spend as much time in Scotland as you can.

If you still have time left, go Westabout Ireland.

My website that sailbad is referring to has moved (because I didn't log in to my free account often enough and they went and deleted it, harrumph!) It's still the same but is now here...

Ray and Margo Glaister have written a book about their trip, but there is little extra information in the book that is not on their web site here...

Check with your insurance that you are covered for all parts you intend to go, especially the West coast of Ireland if you go there.

Can't agree nowhere worth stopping on the East Coast! Blakeney is fantastic, but you'll go aground if you try it at night, or at least I do. You must not miss out Grimsby either, but only because everywhere else on the circumnavigation will seem like paradise.

Good luck...

Who put the \'grim\' in Grimsby?

The only time I took a boat all the way up the E. Coast Grimsby was a most enjoyable 24 hour stop.

We arrived at two in the morning after an interesting trip up the Humber. When I called the lock up on the VHF to say that from across the river the entrance lights weren't obvious to my bleary eyes, the lock-keeper told me to just head in the general direction and he'd be there with a torch, which I thought was pretty helpful.

When we got in the bar was still open and we drank whisky until after three with an eccentric Belgian singlehander who was rebuilding his engine.

The next morning at the chandlers the proprietor gave us a lift in his car to Tescos for our breakfast, and later delivered the small item we had purchased free of charge to the boat!

OK, it smells of fish a bit and is a long way off the beaten track - but for price and friendliness I've not been anywhere to match it.

So - it's not so grim in Grimsby . . .

Re: If one were turn Eastward

Sunderland - all-weather-all tide port/marina. Head straight for the Wear Boating Association, cheerful, friendly and dirt-cheap Fed Special! From there do two day trips:-
Durham by day (beautiful cathedral/ pleasant town) + Beamish open-air museum.
Metro Centre (pronounced "Medro Senna") for serious retail therapy + Newcassel's Bigg Market (the Metro stop after Central Station) for gawping at the bright young thngs in their glad rags. If you get too hot and bothered, head for the Printer's Pie to shoot some pool.

From there, it's a day sail to Amble (good food at the "Marina Arms") - Harry Potter fans should check out Alnwick Castle; next stop Lindisfarne (bilge keelers dry out, fin keels pick up the Amble or Royal Northumberalnd YC buoys) - or to Inner Farne (bird sanctuary - you may not be allowed ashore).

Enjoy!

You forgot...

Hadrians Wall.. preferably the bit near Haydon Bridge
The New Blinking Eye Bridge (do this at night .... you could even tie up at the Town (Newcastle Quay right under it.. then you can fully appreciate the sights and sounds of my favourite English City..
If you can make it also take in Craster .. Dunstanburgh Castle's dramatic ruins on the coast and Craster Smokies yum yum
.. there's probably more.. oh St Mary's Light House at Whitley Bay.. and the one Grace Darling rowed out to rescue the Mariners from..
